Stringing: Is No stringing possible?

Hi and thanks for your help & inputs.

Please see attached picture for reference.

So I have already done a temperature tower and arrived at the optimal temp for Hello3D PLA.

I am a complete newbie to PrusaSlicer which moved from Cura.

Is there anything else I can do to remove stringing or must I accept it that there will always be stringing?

I have retraction @ 6mm & retraction speed at 45mm.

Thanks.

RE: Stringing: Is No stringing possible?

I spent a lot of time chasing fine stringing issues myself. The worst thing I did was start following advice for other printers, particularly those using bowden feeds rather than direct drive. I finally realized that retraction, wiping, coasting, z-hop and other measures are all workarounds to deal with what is largely an extrusion issue. I finally realized that calibrating the extrusion multiplier for each new type of filament gives the slicer parameters that allow it to more closely match my printer and filament physical settings. My results improved markedly.

Here's a test sample I printed with PETG (notoriously stringy) starting with a retraction distance of 0 at the front-left and increasing retraction in increments of 0.2mm with no z-lift and no wiping:

I expected to see lots of stringing at 0 and gradually less as retraction lengths increased. After calibrating my extrusion multiplier, any length of retraction is sufficient to eliminate fine stringing. I can usually get by with 0.2-0.4mm retraction length, 0.4mm z-lift and disabling wiping completely.

Calibrating Linear Advance for each filament also helps. I usually do this along with the extrusion multiplier calibration when trying a new filament.

If I start to encounter fine stringing after printing for a while without, it usually means the filament has absorbed moisture. I dry the spool before twiddling with slicer settings and most of the time, that resolves the problem.

I have documented the details here.

@bobstro

Thank you so much. I have an Ender 5 Pro with a Duet board & RepRap with a 2nd extruder I still need to add to PS ... but don't have the guts yet. I am too afraid of messing up my current good working profile. I have boden tubes on both  my extruders, no direct drives. I haven't checked your documentation yet, but it will be interesting to learn how you were able to change each piece's settings on its own.

Any tips for adding/setting up a second extruder? Is there a way to copy the settings from Extruder #1 (T0) and use/paste it into Extruder #2 (T1)? And then the thing that scares me the most ... setting up the settings for tool changes. Literally like a mountain in front of me. I almost used the whole day to print bed level calibration prints and who knows what just to not jump into setting dual extrusion up.

Thanks again for sharing & happy printing.

And the less intellectual approach 😇:

I'm not printing anything for mass production. So in cases where I see stringing, I just use the heat gun to take care of things... Just saying...

BTW, yesterday I printed some xmas gifts with wood filament. Talking about stringing... 🤣
