Slicing problem and cannot find why..

Hi,

I'm trying to slice a model (created in Blender and already repaired before importing in PrusaSlicer 2.20 as I do with most of my other models) but i's not working.

The stl (also tried .obj without success) is imported in PrusaSlicer without detecting any errors but the result of the slicing seems only to have the bottom and top layers.

Here are pics of the model and the result :

Any hint at what I should check ?

is it Blender that only creates the shells? 

I have never used it, but IIRC, this is a common problem.

Thanks for the reply Joan!

I didn't know that was a Blender known issue.

I've already  use the same process hundreds of time (Blender design + repair by makeprintable) without any problem so far.

As you point to a Blender issue, I will see if I can track the problem to a specific part of the model.

your model is a hollow shell, and at the size it is the walls aren't thick enough in most of it for them to print with the extrusion width you likely have with a 0.4mm nozzle.  Basically get rid of the internal shell and make it solid.  I wondered why the file size was so large, its all the extra hidden internal geometry.

btw its not a blender issue, as its used alot for models and I use it all the time.  This is purely a result of the actual model design not of the software used.

I am a total noob to Blender, but there is a 3D Print Toolbox Add-on build into the newer versions of Blender. Maybe that could be a help to fix models before exporting to STL.

There’s nothing wrong with the model as such, it’s a perfectly valid model, it’s manifold etc. It’s got about 4 thin edges and lots of overhangs as reported by the 3dprint tool but those are all the ‘roofs’ of the internal voids inside. 
without an attached .3mf file I can only guess that it’s using a normal 0.4 nozzle profile which just won’t print the thin walls, basically it’s not suitable for printing with a fdm printer as designed.

Thansk !

I repaired the model with 'adjustment of wall thickness' to 1mm and it can now be sliced correctly (have to play a bit with this parameters to see what adjustment is needed)

How did ou identify that it was a to-thin-wall issue?

I imported the model into Blender and then ran the 3dprint tool on it.  That didn't find anything too outrageous except for all the reported overhangs.  At first I couldn't figure out why there were so many reported as you just can't see them. 
It wasn't until I switched to wire frame view that I saw the internal structure and the light bulb came on.  That also explained why the file size was so large for the model. 

Once you see that you aren't dealing with a solid model but something with walls then if you are used to slicing problems then it became obvious that the walls were too thin for the likely extrusion width settings.
