Setting up printing profile for use with a 0.8mm for the first time.

I'm sure there's more to it than just changing the nozzle diameter in the printer config, but is there a good guide for setting up to use a 0.8mm nozzle?

Yes!, and not that I am aware of. but several members use 0.8mm so you may get an answer off them!
in the mean time compare the 0.4mm and 0.6mm profiles in expert mode and you may get some hints!
here are some details

I've got a set of example profiles using a variety of nozzle sizes that you can use to get started. I've also got notes on customizing PrusaSlicer profiles. The specific items you need to address are:

  1. Nozzle size.
  2. Extrusion width. Note: Set to '0' to let PrusaSlicer calculate widths for you based on nozzle size.
  3. Layer height.

Note that a 0.8mm nozzle is potentially going to put out a lot more filament (up to 8X) than the 0.4mm nozzle, so be prepared to print at much slower speeds. I've got some notes on nozzle selection and impacts.

Hi

I been 3d printing for about a year and half now and has some great prints with 0.4mm nozzle. On my Ender 3 pro. but now ill like to try 0.6 or 0.8 nozzle but not sure on what settings to use E.g layer high and speed so on can someone please help

It would appreciate

Thanks

Layer height should be no more than 80% of nozzle size. Any higher and extrusions take on a round cross section with insufferable contact with lower layers, likely resulting in poor adhere.

Extrusion width should be within 120% of nozzle size, though with quality nozzles, you can often get away with 200%.

At max settings, a 0.8mm nozzle will put out 4X as much filament per second as a 0.4mm. You will need to reduce speeds significantly to avoid overrun your hotend's capacity. The Max volumetric speed setting in PrusaSlicer will do this throttling for you.

Bridging and overhangs are a challenge with large nozzles. Keep expectations low as you start learning.

@bobstro

What a great resource! thank you. I have a quick question: Is there any reason I couldn't use your MK3 presets for my MK3S?

The profiles should work fine with a Mk3s. Many users have reported complete success using them on the Mk3s.

Do be aware that Prusa has made some changes in the latest PrusaSlicer Alpha releases that might impact how printer profiles are imported. Those profiles are for v2.2 and older. The printer profiles might require some fiddling with newer versions.

Glad it's useful. Let me know if you encounter any issues.
