Prusa Slicer 2.6 Alpha 2 is available on Github

Available now guys.

The change list is long and awesome 🙂

https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/releases/tag/version_2.6.0-alpha2

Naturally as an alpha there will likely be bugs but the faster we get to finding them the faster we get a stable release.

Pretty awesome.    The only gap for me with the new features is the lack of a female to female connector mode, ie. just 2 holes with the option to generate separate pins.   This would make it easier to use magnets or print both parts with their cut sides flat on the build plate.   Perhaps in an upcoming release.  👍

Yes, and my first two attempts of slicing an old file ended up in crashes ☹️

And shift-click to draw a cut line but NO similar thing to draw straight seams or supports?!? Makes me wanna cry…

RE:

I know it's an alpha, just comparing  notes with my fellow guinea pigs.

It crashed a lot for me as well, more then 20 times in 2 hours just seeing if the projects I made in 2.4 & 2.5 would slice. 'Seams" are still not fixed from 2.5 wavy gravy 🙁 and it didn't like me rotating objects or parts, never really got to the new stuff, it was very fussy about geometry. It did not like certain shapes touching other shapes and then rotating. I guess I'll kinda wait and see what happens.

I had a similar experience to yours @Fuchsr, but when I tried to use the measure tool, it wouldn't activate.

RE:

Just a quick note: you still can't do individual skirts for sequentially printed objects, and the skirt is still being implemented in such a way as to cause an undetectable nozzle crash.

I'll add more as I test, for those concerned. Once again I would like to point out this is for the users not the developers.

As for me, this alpha2 crashes when I open my models (MacBook Air M1, Ventura). Tinkering with it from scratch, I discovered that if the model includes a modifier whose any of the following settings is different from the base global settings:

  • Bottom solid layers
  • Top solid layers
  • Ensure vertical shell thickness

then the app crashes immediately. Maybe it occurs with other modifier settings too, but I have already uninstalled the app.

RE:

Seem to be model specific. I have old models with modifiers that change and bottom solid layers that work okay. But then another one in which I simply change the infill percentage dies immediately.

Ok so it is rather a large software instability at this point, rather than a specific incompatibility with some settings.

I noticed a couple of people reporting crashes on slicing and on at least 2 of those the problem was duplicated and confirmed by the devs and the cause found which would only crop up with certain geometries so I'd expect a fair few of these to start with.
Wonder how long it will be until alpha 3 lol

In my hands this has been a surprisingly unstable alpha on just basic operations (I've hardly looked at any of the new stuff). Maybe they did some major refactoring on how they implement modifiers but I didn't see anything mentioned in the release notes.

I'm almost disappointed, I've not had a single crash yet.  I played around with some older projects on my home pc last night for a couple of hours, mainly seeing how the organic supports would work instead of the snug ones that they did use.  Also checked out the new cut function which was quite nice but the options available to it are weirdly named and its not obvious what does what.
For example I noticed MrB mentioned he couldn't do a hole in both parts of the cut so wanted to see what the issue was, but that seems to be down to the choice between Plug and Dowel.  Plug does a post and hole and Dowel creates a hole in both parts and an extra printable connector piece.

The measure tool was as pointless as I expected it to be, isn't as easy or nice to use as the 3d-tool one so that's one thing I doubt I'll ever use.

I've also used it briefly on my work pc today and not had an issue there either.

Its actually some of the smaller things listed in the release notes I like rather than the big new stuff.  Like being able to configure a keep away distance for the edges of the bed for example.  Also the list of bug fixes included in 2.6 was an unexpected surprise.  While they may not have hit the more long running bugbears there were more fixes than I thought there would be.

Yes, thanks.  I just came back to mention this after further experimentation.  It is stable for me as well.

I'm having trouble finding the "Avoid crossing curled overhangs" setting listed in the patch notes. It's not under the Print Settings>Quality section for me like the patch notes say. I also tried searching all of the settings for it and didn't see it. Is this a me issue, or is everyone missing it?

Are you sure you didn't accidentally open v2.5? It's in 2.6a indeed:

It's likely @constructicon is not in expert mode.

I was in the right version, the issue was that I wasn't in "Expert" mode so the setting was hidden.

Of course... I was in Expert mode for so long that I forgot about the others. Glad you found the setting.

So my first project I open up to have a play with organic supports has exactly gone great, with most of trhe supports ending a good 1cm before the overhanging part of the object.

Going to try playing around a bit more to try and identify the cause.

Should have done a bit more playing first, I turned off variable layer height on the parts and the supports generate fine now. Guess the two features clash somehow. I'll creat a github issue if there isn't one already.

For the love of God, don't be one of those jerks who have opened 3,136473342 tickets with "Organic supports don't work with variable layer height". Jerks because all they showed was that they didn't bother actually reading the release notes which EXPLICITLY state that organic supports—guess what—DON'T work with variable layer height!
