Paint-on Supports does not recognize entire model

Hello

I am trying to use paint-on supports and print with the "for support enforcers only" setting.

Unfortunately, a crucial part of the model that needs supports is not recognized and thus cannot be painted on (Image 1). When I slice it however, the entire model, including the part of the wing that was not visible before, is being sliced correctly (Image 2). When I then use paint-on supports and slice it with "for support enforcers only" the crucial part of the model does not have any supports (picture 3) because it could not be painted on.

What I've done so far:

- Updated Prusa from 2.5.0 to 2.5.2.

- Changed the model slightly in Blender end re-imported it as .stl

any suggestions on how to proceed?

Pictures are showing as broken to me and won't load. In any case, we prefer to see the 3mf project file. Set up your project, then use File→Save as). This will save the STL and most importantly, all your settings. Zip compress it (or the forum software will reject it), and use the Attach file button below the text edit window to upload it here.

Done. Is my first time posting so was not familiar with the interface. Also uploaded the images again for illustrative purposes.

Thanks for help.

Looking at your project your model is broken.  Look at the right hand tree object view.  Your model has a yellow warning triangle next to it.  If you hover over it you will see it lists MANY errors.  Even before that though just looking at the model on the plater, its green which is normal but those dark green areas of the wings, those are visual indicators of issues.

If you are on windows you have the right click and fix through Netfabb option.  Which if you do use, does in this case fix the model. Mostly.  There's a couple of small gaps in the innermost wing membranes. It does however then allow you to paint those areas.

I'm a fellow Blender user so if you want someone to take a look at your model itself then I can do if you zip up and attach the blend file.

Personally while the Netfabb fix is good I prefer to get my models done properly in the first place.  If you haven't already turn on Blenders 3d Print tool which can point out areas that need fixing (and in some cases fix them for you).

Don't think I should share the blend file because it is based on a purchased model of a gecko. My niece then wished to have some wings on it and so I modified it accordingly.

I was aware of the warnings but in previous cases I could usually print the model due to PrusaSlicer's helpful auto-repair function. In the future I will also try options like Netfabb.

As for this one, the amount of open edges did seem pretty high. When revising the model, I realized that there are closed faces inside between the "Skin" and the bone of the Wing. When makig the wings, after modeling I proceeded to sculpt the model and turn it all into triangles. Auto-deleting the inside faces retroactively was not so easy anymore because they occasionally overlap into the visible outside area and thus can no longer be deleted cleanly.

I went on to manually add some "supports" beneath the open parts of the wings in blender and this roughly fixed the issue. In the end I was able to print the model and am satisfied with the result.

Understandable about the purchased model.  However you could just do one with the wings as that is the structure with issues.  Although given that you have already printed it and worked around its only if you wanted to use it as a learning exercise would it be worth it.

With Blender and overlapping geometry I've found that if you group them in Blender then export the result when slicing is usually lets just say not very good to downright disastrous 🙂  However if you don't group in Blender but just select them all and export selected as stl then the slicer can handle that just fine.  PS can handle a lot of things and intersecting geo usually isn't a problem as long as the individual bits are valid.  Its clipping does that.  What it really really cant handle is non manifold geo.

RE:

I have very good experiences with the in-built netfabb correction tool in Prusa slicer, with complicated models it might take a long while but the quality of the repair is usually very good. I am not very proficient in Blender (just enough to export also error ridden stl files ;)) but I have tried various other tools in programs and haven't found anything that is easier to use and as powerful.

You made me delve into the model once more. While preparing to send a blend file containing only the wings, I realized there was a backup version of the wings hidden before I had applied any modifiers. On that version it was super easy and straight forward to delete the inside faces. I then went on to export it and put it into prusa slicer and - tadaa the whole wing could be painted.

However, the wings still had some 348 errors to auto-repair, even without applying the subdivision surface modifier in blender, which really made me wonder. So I have attached two blend files, version 3.8 is before I deleted the inside faces and version 3.9 after. If you can further improve the 3.9 one I would be glad to learn. There are some N-gons still but should only be very few.

Also attached an image of the printed little winged-gecko. Glad I've found an active community here as I will surely return with more issues^^

That zip just has a 3mf file in it, there dont appear to be any blend files attached or in the zip.  Remember to attach anything but pics or text you need to zip it up on the forum.
