Opening files from Synology Nas Drive

Hi all first time here,

All my .stl files are on my Synology Nas Drive, I can drag and drop them into slicer okay but if I try File > Open Project and open the folder on the Nas Drive it won't allow me to select any .stl files to open.

Could this be a read/write issue?

However other apps allow me to open direct from File > Open

Many Thanks

Dave

I have a synology but don't use it like you are.  I'm confused though by your problem.  Could you describe it clearer, as a stl isn't a project file and shouldn't be able to be opened as a project.  Basically a step by step needed to duplicate the problem.

Even files locally on my computer If I select File>Open Project it only shows me 3mf files or amf files in the file list.  Not stl files.  That's because stl files are not project files.  I can use Import and then select a stl to add to the plater or use the add button on the toolbar to select an stl locally.  I will try when I get home to load files from my Synology.

Are you saying that when you use the add button you cant browse to your NAS and select an stl ?

Also what Operating System are you on ? as I'm sure that will make a difference to file access from remote locations.

I've just realised the error of my ways and thanks for the support - should be using import or the add button.

Sorry but a newbie to Prusa and been using Cura so still working my way around.

FYI I'm using MacOS Big Sur

Again thanks

Dave

Projects can get a little confusing at the start.  Especially as some of the ways they are handled are changing in the upcoming 2.4 release.

PS uses the 3mf file type to save its projects.  A Prusa Slicer created 3mf contains the models you add, any modifiers, orientations, support painting etc as well as a copy of your Print, filament and printer profiles.  They act as a snapshot of your current build plate.  Its why they are so handy to use for debugging as it allows other to slice with the same settings you are using.

You can OPEN a 3mf and when you do it loads in the profiles from that project.  So the print and filament etc all update to what was stored in the project.  However you can also ADD a 3mf, just like you can an stl.  That loads in the models from the 3mf but shouldn't load in the profiles you have selected.  You are just adding content, not opening the project.  Its a minor but important difference.  Can be confusing though till you get used to it.

However the 3mf format is used my other software and becoming more widely used over time.  CAD programs such as Fusion 360 also export as 3mf too.  Their 3mf files have model data but don't contain profile data as they don't know anything about printers or filament (at the moment).  The 3mf format is evolving and only time will tell what sort of interoperability we end up with.  I'd expect that OPENing a fusion 3mf will just load the objects and leave the selected profiles alone as there's none specified in the 3mf.  Don't use Fusion though so haven't tried that use case yet.
