Odd Perimeters and External Perimeters in Slice

I noticed something odd in my 5-tool slice of a logo. As you can see there are various “perimeters” and ”external perimeters” in my slice. Some things I noticed.

  • Most of them start on the first layer and go through and stop when the multicolor comes in to play.
  • Some go all the way up and are never part of a color change.
  • Some start on layer 2 and only exist a few layers.

It seems like these features are not needed and only increases print time/complexity. What are they and why do they exist? Can I turn them off? Thanks!

So I posted this over on GitHub and with some help I was able to finally figure it out. For anyone who’s interested, here’s the GitHub discussion. Hope this helps you if you have a similar issue and came across this thread. 😉

Looks like most or all of them correspond with small/acute corners of your model. My wild guess is the sharp corners are getting truncated at some step along your workflow which results in all these tiny holes. But I'm not knowledgeable enough to explain/fix it even if I'm right.

I want to say there's a setting in PS that more or less fills small holes but I've never used it, only read about it in passing.

I kind of think that myself, but it's racking my brain that there's not enough consistency for that to be the case. Some go all the way up even where there is never a color change, like towards the back of the panther head. Others are covered over a few layers later. I think we're on the right path, there just something we're missing.

I was playing around with this a little bit more and decided for the heck of it make it 100% infill. They still appear. 😞 Anyone have a better idea than me? 😁
