New to Forum question on download STL

Hi all,

Been printing with my MK3S for years and loving it. All my prints have been from my own STL files........ now i am trying to print files downloaded from the popular website like thingaverse......... but when I slice some of these files thru Prusa Slicer, the correct pinter moves do not appear to be incorporated in my G-Code. The print head does not prime, the bed heats before the print head and parks in the front and very low while waiting for the bed to heat...... and when the print is done the printer does not cool down.

I am trying to learn the file system quirks.

RE:

Are you sure you are using STL files ?  Stl files when loaded into Prusa Slicer still use your profiles, ie Print, Filament and Printer.

If however you are opening a 3mf file you have downloaded from a website then its possible with 3mf files for them to contain the profiles of their original creators machines.  If that is the case then you are slicing for THEIR printer and not your own.  So double check the selected profiles.  (this can also happen with other file types like AMF too).  A 3mf file can contain much more than geometry/model data, depending on the program that has created it.

You can load in a 3mf without using any associated profiles that may be stored inside it it.  When you OPEN a 3Mf file you are saying use all the contents including the profile.  If you start PS and make sure the profiles you want to use are selected you can then use the Add button from the platter at the top [cntrl+I].  Add just Adds geometry, ie model data.  OPEN , well Opens the file so loads everything.

Yes, everything i have done is with STL files...... it was always my assumption that Prusa Slicer would encode in the G-Code the instruction to run the MK3S properly (print a priming run, start the printhead first so you can clean off excess filament, and cool down after the pring was finished.

It will if you have the correct printer profile selected when you slice.  If for some reason you dont then it will only do the gcodes included in that profile.

If you find it happening again then Save the project from Prusa Slicer, so as a 3mf, zip up the 3mf and attach it here.  That way we can load the 3mf file in and see exactly what profiles and settings it is using and we can try and debug the issue further.

Must be zipped or the forum will just silently not attach the file.

When I load your 3mf project file into Prusa Slicer v2.8.0 (what I have installed at work) then the profiles it displays as being contained in there (which should be what your printer is using when you saved the file) are Print = default (Modified), Filament = Generic ABS (Modified) and Printer = Default FFF (Modified).  As such you do not have a Mk3 selected.  The Default profile has very little in the way of start gcode configured, just homing all axes and a small lift up to Z5 afterwards.  The gcode flavour is also set to RepRap/Sprinter which if that doesnt match your printer wont be helping.

The end code field also just has M104 S0 to turn off temperature and another G28 t X0 to home the X axis.

Heres the platter with your project file loaded and sliced

Note the selected profiles in the top right.  If you are using a MK3s then the Printer should be a MK3s profile in there.  Selecting a Mk3s will then allow you to select more suitable Print and Filament profiles.  The defaults are not very good.

Ok, I had the time to print a test file. And right you are. With the MK3S profile selected the standard motion of the printer were restored............ no i just have to go back through the 100's of setting to fine tune the printer to what it used to be....lolol

A big big thanks again.!!!

One thing you should get into the habit of doing is saving projects each time.  Might seem pointless but it means you can always load back in exactly what you had before and its easier to make changes, for example if theres a new profile update.

The other thing you may not realise is possible is that every gcode file you generate from Prusa Slicer stores the majority of the print settings at the end of the gcode file.  It doesn't store placement , modifiers etc but the basic settings are there.  You can use File>Import>Import Config and select one of your old gcode files.  That will load in the settings from that gcode file.

The similar Import from Project file allows you to load them in from any previously saved 3mf file.   It is a very handy couple of options to know about.
