Monotonic Solid Infill Request

I'm not sure how hard it would be to implement, but I would LOVE to see an option to make the solid infill act like the Monotonic top/bottom layers infill.  I've been playing with some translucent filament and forcing the solid infill to all print in the same direction would greatly improve the visual clarity of the prints!

Thanks!

RE: Monotonic Solid Infill Request

Hi and welcome to the forum.

This is a user to user forum mainly,  feature requests should be made to the github site for Prusa Slicer https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+sort%3Aupdated-desc

Discussing them before making them though is always welcome.  Its also well worth checking if a feature request has already been made as duplicate issues will get removed.

Monotonic infill just refers to how the lines are laid down within the layer.  If it was applied to multiple layers they would still be printed at 90 degrees to each other.  This is for part strength.

However as you point out for certain use cases this isn't desirable.  In fact while I cant seem to find it I seem to recall that the ability to do what you want has already been made over on github.  There are over 1800 open issues so it can be difficult to find stuff if you don't happen to know what keywords are relevant.

Meanwhile you might want to have a read of this thread to see if it might let you do what you want in a workaround fashion https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/prusaslicer/top-solid-infill-orientation/

RE: Monotonic Solid Infill Request

I too would like to see a 'Monotonic' option for solid infill.

The workaround suggested above does not accomplish this request.

The fact that solid fill orientation changes 90 degrees between layers does not mean that monotonic solid infills would be meaningless.

As the knowledgebase suggests: "The "monotonic" infill is essentially a rectilinear infill with modified path planning. The infill lines are extruded left to right monotonically, a line is never extruded to the left of an already extruded infill line. This strikingly simple strategy leads to a homogenous texture without ugly ridges."

The 'ugly ridges' are more than ugly and not just an issue for printing transparent/translucent filaments.  A ridge in any layer will affect surface finish on layers printed after it and in the extreme could cause crashes.

The ugly ridges are much less likely using monotonic solid infills.

Does anyone familiar with github know if monotonic solid infills is being worked on?

RE: Monotonic Solid Infill Request

Its been requested for all areas of solid infill as a feature request on Github.  As to when or even if it will be implemented, that is unknown as in most cases the developers don't give a roadmap of what they are working on.
You get occasional snippets where something might be mentioned, but they are more off handed comments more than anything.  Sort of we are looking at x at some point.
Actually I recall someone putting in a feature request for them to add a roadmap/what they are working on lol.

Making monotonic infill for every layer by using "solid layers every:"

I, too, wish there was a way to tell PrusaSlicer to make more than one layer monotonic. I find that sometimes with just one monotonic layer, there is still evidence of non-monotonic layer bumps on the previous layer showing through.

However, I have at least found a workaround that works for me in certain cases:
Under Print Settings > Infill > Advanced > Solid Infill Every: _ layers
I choose 1 and now every layer seems to be solid and monotonic. This works really well with clear filaments.

You're in luck. PrusaSlicer 2.3.2 includes the following since the beta release:

In PrusaSlicer 2.3.2, if the top solid infill is Monotonic, all internal solid infill is newly Monotonic as well #4939.

Squee!

And just like that...installed the new version and everything is monotonic! I think this makes ironing a feature I'll no longer need to use. Thanks @bobstro for getting this done! 😝

Not a dev!

Wups, sorry. I'm not a developer. Just a joke and good timing.

bobstro's an unwitting dev by proxy!

I know, but I just wanted to thank you, nonetheless. I'm always amazed and impressed with how they keep updating the slicer so frequently and adding to the features. That is a great thing about software development - no issues with supply chain. I appreciate them focusing on what the could do right now instead of waiting for their suppliers to get back up to normal capacity.

Soldid layers/top

Maybe I misread your request and maybe already answered but if you have solid infil why not just make solid layers/top a huge number?

Monotonic was top layer only

Unless I'm mistaken, Monotonic was only used on the top-most layer previously.
