gaps in support material grid

Hello all,

When slicing models with supports, why does PrusaSlicer sometimes leave gaps in the support material grid?  I've attached screenshots of a couple of examples.

These gaps and unsupported bridges often cause defects in the prints.  The unsupported support grid layers above the gaps will sometimes fall down or get stuck to the nozzle, causing zits and blobs in the print (I mainly print with PETG).  I don't understand why the gaps are necessary because they interrupt otherwise continuous regions of support material grid.

I am using PrusaSlicer 2.4.2, auto generated supports, and the default support material options.

Here's another example. The support grid starts and stops for no obvious reason, leaving some areas of support material grid unsupported. 🙄

The extra bridging seems like it adds unnecessary risk of material dropping down into the print or accumulating on the nozzle.
