Infill and/or Support color leakage and how to avoid

I have a model that is a knob with a sloped side where text appears. The model almost certainly needs some improvements, but in my current test, I am seeing what I think is "filament color" bleed from infill and/or organic support. I am using PrusaSlicer 2.8.0 with an MK4 and MMU3.

  • Is there a way to force all infill and supports to be done with a specific color?
  • Also, what are some recommendations or considerations that might help avoid this in the future?

Thanks,

Sean

Your original stl file is corrupt with almost 500 open edges check your CAD output is set to export manifold files.

You only have two vertical shells, a lot of the bleed is infill exposed by the shallow slope; a few more vertical shells fix most of it.  You could also set the infill extruder to the same as colour one.

Please save your project as a .3mf file

Files > Save Project as

Zip the .3mf and post it here. It will contain both your part and your settings for us to diagnose.

So, I completely rebuilt the model with my newfound FreeCAD skills, and slicing works perfectly with the new model.

That being said, I am still interested in what was going on with this version, if only because it didn't look so bad in 3D view, but once it was sliced, it was a mess around some of the surface text, as can be seen in the original screenshots. The broken PrusaSlicer 3MF file is attached.

Thanks!

No file attached - you did zip it?

Hmmm. Odd. I did ZIP it. Let me try again.

Thanks. I was aware of the open edges, but the term "manifold files" is new to me, so I will look into that. This was my first model, so I am learning a lot at the time about the CAD software and the general process. I went back and rebuilt the whole model from scratch, and the new version is perfect, but it is good to have a better understanding of how things like this occur. It was odd to me that so much of this only becomes visually apparent at the slicing step.

You could also set the infill extruder to the same as colour one.

Out of curiosity, With a single extruder, is it possible to tell PrusaSlicer to use a specific color for all of the infill?

If you are using MMU or Manual MMU and therefore virtual extruders - Yes.

Print Settings > Multiple Extruders > Extruders - various settings.

I do have the MMU3, and I know how to do the multi-material painting with the virtual extruders, but it is not clear to me how I tell it to use a specific extruder for all of the infill. How is that achieved?

Diem already told you how.  Go to Print Settings>Multiple Extruders>Extruders.  In that section you can assign an extruder number to Perimeters, Infill, Solid Infill, Support Material, Support Material Interface etc.  They are Yellow settings so you need to be in either Normal or Expert mode to see them.

I realize that he was trying to explain it, but it wasn't clear to me initially, which is why I asked again. However, with your additional details and looking back at the settings it makes more sense. I am actually a bit confused now about my last print since the two settings I would have expected to need to change are already set correctly. Oh well, I play around with it a bit.

Thanks to both of you.
