How to do a partial cut?

Hello,

how does one do a partial cut?

In the below case, I'd like to cut the arm, but not cut the main body on the right. I can move the cutting plane, but it appears that the plane always cuts through everything.

And you have now run into one of the limitations of the cut tool.  You cant do what you want (yet).  I saw someone has requested that functionality on github already though. https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/9472

This is why no matter what fancy tools they add its going to always be better to be familiar with some for of CAD tool.

RE:

You can try the following: Do the cut like in your picture but select "parts" instead of "objects" in the cut dialog. This way everything stays in the correct relative position. Select the part you really want moved away in the tree-view, right click and export as .STL, then right click and delete it. Add the exported .STL as new object (Cmd-I). Now you can arrange it the way you want since it's separated from the rest of the model.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.
Find out why this is pinned in the general section!

I have tried this method, but it doesn't seem to yield the desired results. For one, when splitting to parts, it leaves me with the purple arm and body as one part, so I can move both of them away and delete them, but then i'm missing not only the arm, but also part of the body. Or alternatively, I do the cut to parts, move them away, do another cut splitting the arm from the body part, then move the body back in position and remove the arm. Though at that point it wont let me place connectors.

Robin's suggestion is valid and can work, however you did not mention using connectors in your original post. If you want to add connectors you need to work with the newer implementation, 2.6a4 will have different behavior then 2.6a3. If no connector has been added to the cut, a cut information will not be applied to the cut.

At this point I would just say use CADD to sever the arm as was suggested above. I'm not sure, but I remember you saying you use TinkerCAD? you can preform the cut there, It might be easier for you.

RE: How to do a partial cut?

Found an (extremely tedious) workaround in PrusaSlicer 2.7.2, hope this helps anyone still with the issue

  1. Make planar cut, add connectors and cut into objects.
  2. Make another planar cut on the multi-body object in the empty space (ignore the warning), cut into objects. Now have 3 parts.
  3. Align the unintentionally cut objects by copy/pasting X and Y world coordinates. In the example above, this would be the top and bottom halves of the body.
  4. Right click on one of the aligned parts and "Invalidate cut info", choose the part with the connector if you added one. Select both parts from the tree-view, Merge and export as .STL.
  5. Import merged part, delete old one.

Voila
