Can't generate any supports

v2.4.0 & 2.4.1

For some reason, I am unable to have the slicer generate any supports. I have tried to paint supports, tried 'Everywhere' etc. but it will not generate any support. Used to work on 2.3. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Tried various models, fixing through Netfab etc. No dice.

Thanks

RE: Can't generate any supports

Did you possibly uncheck the box "generate support automatically" in the tab "Print Settings"? (I run the German language, it´s second tab from the left)

I try to give answers to the best of my ability, but I am not a 3D printing pro by any means, and anything you do you do at your own risk. BTW: I have no food for…

Hmmm, I changed filament profile from a custom PLA to the Generic PLA and now it works... I'll have to investigate. Something is not right....

Stay tuned...

@zenzanon

That's not been a problem at all on my end, care to post a Zipped up .3mf project file, exported from PrusaSlicer? I'll take a look.

Note: If you don't zip the file, the forums file server will not accept it and allow it to be posted.

RE: Can't generate any supports

I've tracked the problem down to a filament definition. I'm using the attached file from PolyMaker for their PLA. When I switch to the Generic PLA provided with PrusaSlicer it works fine. I've compared the two files using the preset comparison tool. I've transposed the settings from the Polymaker file to a copy of the Generic PLA, still does not work. So I decided to make a copy of the Generic and transpose the PolyMaker settings to it and that works.

I have no idea what the problem is with the attached PolyMaker file (if any).

RE: Can't generate any supports

The thing is that .ini file isn't a filament profile.  It contains settings for all 3 profiles, print, filament and extruder.  Including settings like "support_material = 0" for example.

Why its blocking you from changing that I'm not sure.  In earlier versions (around 2.1-ish) we did see a couple of cases where users had downloaded profiles and they couldn't change certain settings.  In those cases the problem was that some of the settings were being duplicated into the wrong sections.  So for example if the Printer Profile section accidentally got a Perimeters =2 value in there then you could change the Print Profile settings to whatever you wanted but there was always the Perimeters=2 under the PRINTER profile.  Of course there's no gui element to display or edit a parameter for perimeters in the printer profile so you would never know it was there or be able to edit it.

It didn't show up or cause a problem when they exported a 3mf either, other people could load their project in and change settings.  It was only when they saved and zipped up their entire config folder that when examined these extra values were spotted.  They were also there in any profiles created/copied from the damaged ones too.  IIRC they ended up wiping their config back to the stone age and starting from scratch avoiding adding the profiles they had downloaded.

Those though had the sections names also defined in them.  The file you attached doesn't and appears to be a normal exported config such as what you get when you use File>Export>Export Config.  I haven't spotted anything unusual in there but then again I'm not a dev 🙂

It's one reason why I always advise against just downloading and adding random .ini files from the internet, even from well intention-ed manufacturers.  If they really want to share profiles then it would be better for them to share a saved 3mf project file and load that in.  Then if the profiles are ok from the project then you can use the save icon to save them to your settings.  Or you know do a proper job with a config BUNDLE that contains all their filaments and just filaments, no print or printer ones.
