Power grid is working outside of specification

I got a RSOD when printing today, particularly irritating, as it was 18 hours into a 24 hr print, and it wouldn't let me continue the print. Prusa's help section says it is a problem with the electricity network, but my mains network is ok. I am in UK.

UK power is usually pretty stable 'though the voltage can drift a little at times of high demand.  If Prusa support are correct then outside of a thunderstorm the most likely cause is some heavy equipment switching nearby and causing a local glitch - if you have an analogue (am/fm) radio plug it into the mains and let it entertain you for a few hours - any spark events or heavy unshielded loads will cause crackling or buzzing interference.  If you have a multi-meter and are confident using it with mains electricity check the mains voltage  periodically around the day.

If the voltage varies contact your power supplier.  If there is heavy interference, try and track it down, it is likely that equipment needs attention or it might become a fire risk.

The other possible culprit is a loose/dirty mains connection - check the power leads are clean and firmly inserted.

 - oh, and check the weather reports, was there lightening in your area at the time of the glitch?

Cheerio,

it was in the morning, no lightening, or anything else that could affect it. I will run another long print and see if it works. might just be a random anomaly.

RE: Power grid is working outside of specification

A few weeks ago, I was getting flashing lights in my house.  Turned out that it was related to the painter next door.  Every time they turned on their pump, I would get a glitch on the LED lights.  I set up my scope and captured the issue and confirmed it was her pump.

So it is possible for something outside your house to be causing issue.  When it comes to storms, it can be Km's away if there are strikes on the power grid and you are tied into that system.

Just had this happen to me, printer was on but not printing, clearly some issue they need to resolve, I have 2 PCs running, neither on a UPS, neither crashed, so it wasn't really a power issue. I just tested my UPS, it gives the same error, basically uselss for the C1L.

This has to be something to do with the Power Panic connection. Since the only other connection to the BuddyBoard is through the 24VDC power supply terminals. Maybe try disconnecting the power panic cable from the power supply and see if that works.

I did some more research, known problem with the C1L if you use a UPS, which I was using.

I now have it plugged into a line conditioner.

UPDATE!

I have had my C1L swapped out by the vendor I bought it from. Printer is going back to Prusa as they don't want anyone swapping mains components

This video (more like a rant) from 3D Musketeers, describes the same issue:

Interesting video.  Adds more context to the discussion.  Businesses usually spend the money for good equipment and decent ups's.  I know that all buildings on generators where I worked had building wide line conditioners.  Others had trip filters as well.

An inductive line filter may be necessary in the printer to help remove some of the issues from UPS or power glitch.  A decent line conditioner on the output of the UPS may help as well.

I agree with the video that Prusa needs to ensure that the printers work with consumer grade UPS's.  Is there a schematic of the controller board for the Core L available?

It would be linked from this page: Open-source at Prusa Research
