Out of Filament warning not working on Core One

My Core One has been working flawlessly for the past few months since I built the kit.  I do have one nagging issue:

Twice now, I've reached the end of my filament (in the middle of the night and unattended)  and the printer did not pause to let me load a new spool, but just kept on printing in mid-air with nothing extruding.  Question: isn't the side filament sensor  (not at the Nextruder) supposed to detect when the filament end runs past that sensor and then pause the print? Wondering if anyone else has seen this?

Thanks in advance for a response.

I've only seen this when I've forgotten to turn it back on after turning it off for top-loading soft TPU. Check in the firmware if it's turned on. If it is, then maybe the sensor is bad. Try rerunning the sensor calibration.

@Mbiasotti,

One more possibility (maybe likelihood) is that your side filament sensor is stuck in the "filament present" state.  There are several posts on the forum cautioning about inserting the magnets so that they don't catch on the inside of the sensor housing.  Since you built from the kit this is a very real possibility so I would check the sensor status (if your sensor is turned on re @hyiger's suggestion) in the printer status screen.  You can also run the filament sensor calibration if you wish but first I would check to see if the status changes with filament present versus removed.

Regards,

Steve

Wish either of these would lead to a solution but they don't.  I've passed the filament sensor calibration test multiple times and have assembled and disassembled the side filament sensor many times and I know the mechanical issues that you speak of. When you insert filament, there are off/on values at the lower part of the Core One interface that confirm that the sensor/s are working when you load filament, and these look good.

" top-loading soft TPU. Check in the firmware if it's turned on"  is intriguing and I'll have to check that, but I've never in the past performed "top-loading soft TPU" and not sure what that is - I'll research.

TPU is a soft flexible type of filament that comes in multiple levels of hardness. The super soft stuff (like 70A) is like over-cooked spaghetti. It's not possible to push it past the side filament sensor, through the Bowden tube and into the extruder without modifications to sensors themselves. Even with the sensor mods it's hard. So I remove the Bowden tube and feed it in directly into the extruder from the top of the printer. Before I do that though I have to turn off the side sensor since I'm essentially bypassing it.

Yes, I have TPU.  I didn't know that there was a way to turn off the side sensor. Is that in the Core One interface or Prusa Slicer.  I doubt that it is turned off - but I'll go check.

Not near my printer but if memory serves you go to the setup menu on on the printer screen and towards the top will be a filament sensor menu. You can check it there.

I've from time to time inadvertently turned stuff off.

I just ran a filament sensor calibration test and both passed just fine. I also checked in the settings that both sensors are turned on.   Could this be a firmware issue?

Again, can someone confirm that when running a print and the end of the filament (spool empty) runs past the side filament sensor, the Core One should pause the print and allow me to unload the remaining filament and reload new filament?

thanks

Can definitely confirm that (in my case) it works. When the filament end goes past the sensor, the print pauses and the filament backs up through the tube. After I pull it out, it prompts me to load more filament. I've been running the 6.4.0-RC firmware for a few weeks. One thing I've noticed with the new firmware, is that when you push the filament past the sensor, it homes the print head and the extruder starts spinning.

I suppose at this point perhaps disassemble the sensor housing and double check it's mechanically functioning.

@hyiger - thanks for the confirmation. I will do a mock test with a piece of filament...

The sensor calibration test doesn't seem to care much about the state of the outside filament sensor.  I had a bad cable to that sensor and I kept passing.   There's a screen that shows the actual state of the input on the board associated with the filament sensor.  Pull that screen up and run filament into and out of the sensor to see if it's working.
