RE: Core One and MMU3

Prusa are more likely to develop something along the lines of this - with the spool rewinders:

I have ordered the Core One and definitely want the MMU3 for it — based on this thread it will clearly work with it. Should I add it to my order or wait and see what my options are when my order ships?

As I understand from the MMU3 page (see my screenshot), there are specific compatibility details listed for each printer. However, the Core One is not yet included in the list. I am interested in ordering the Core One and clearly want the MMU3 as well, but I am waiting for the Core One to be officially listed as compatible with the MMU3.

I’m concerned that if you order the MMU3 (MK4s - last version) now, you might end up missing something later. Perhaps it’s just printed parts, but since Prusa hasn’t communicated about this yet, it’s unclear. For this reason, I’m holding off on ordering the Core One until I can get the MMU3 with it right away.

If anyone has any insights about this, I’m all ears.

RE: Core One and MMU3

I’m quite sure the current MMU3 will be exactly the same with the Core One. What will change is the bracket so that it hangs into the rear panel of the Core One. Otherwise the mechanism and unit itself will remain the same.
Personally I’m expecting a new printable bracket for current MMU3 owners. Nothing more. I’m more interested to see the spool storage solution……

RE: Core One and MMU3

One issue I see with using MMU3 on Core One is the distance between the MMU and extruder looks to be somewhat longer than it is with previous printers.  Will that require a redesigned buffer to accommodate the extra retraction length?  Let’s hope they come up with something better than just an even bigger buffer.  The best user mod I’ve seen for buffers is the Shark from @Martin_au.  We’ll see what Prusa comes up with…

RE: Core One and MMU3

Hey dude!!

Also printing the Shark V6 buffer system - thanks for you help with that BTW!

From my understanding Prusa will go for a solution like the [un]original DryBox thats on Printables, so that to can sit on top of the Core One enclosure - I'm sure I saw a pic of a 'possible solution' around the time of the Prusa Blog post, but I have no idea where I saw it now! As for the buffer - maybe it will be incorporated into the right side of the printer, in the space where the current spool holder is situated?...... Seems to be the easiest way to do things with minimal change required to the core one unit itself......

RE: Core One and MMU3

I recently emailed Prusa asking would the MK4 MMU3 version work with the Core one.

This was their response:

Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately, the MMU3 designed for the MK4S is not officially compatible with the Core One at this time. While it might be technically possible to mount it with modifications, this setup hasn’t been tested or supported by us, and we can’t guarantee its functionality or performance on the Core One. The good news is that we plan to adapt the MMU3 for use with the Core One in the future. Once the adaptation is officially available, we’ll provide all the necessary instructions and components to ensure it works seamlessly.

For me this is really disappointing as you could argue the Core One is still  not competitive in the market as there are other manufactures who you can purchase their printers get them sooner and multi colour print straight away. So let alone we don't really know when the printers will be shipped but it could be many, many months off till you get to pre-order the core one mmu3. I'm going to assume as to this response they will not support it on prusa slicer as well. I haven't used any other slicers so I don't even know if that's an option if you just want to take the risk and get the MK4 kit and wing it. 🙁

RE: Core One and MMU3

Thanks for the info @david-robert-slade, greatly appreciated.

I am new to the hobby but a LOOOOONG time (since 1997) web programmer used to fiddling with things to make them work. MMU seems like a thing you don’t initially need but once you have it you wonder what you did without it.

I intend to have the Core One be my “stable” printer and are narrowing down options for a “project” printer that I explore the DIY side of the hobby.

It confirms my doubts and adds a few months to the wait. Thank for your answer.

RE: Core One and MMU3

Well thats unfortunate. Looks like my MMU3 will need to be put away for a while then!

They've already said it will be compatible so I'm glad I will eventually be able to use it though. It's more a matter of them refining the details - ie, how it will fit onto the top/rear of the Core One, as well as their buffer and spool storage solution etc. I don't think it's anything more major than this considering the core electronics etc are all the same as the MK4s, so the firmware shouldn't take too long to tweak either.......then again, this is Prusa we're talking about! LOL

Im currently building this system:

I only ever use PLA so not so fussed about an air tight solution as such, more after protection from dust (I print every now and then) and an easy loading solution. This seems to tick the boxes.......

RE: Core One and MMU3

Wow thats a bummer. I saw several pictures/videos of mmu3 on top of core one. Does it mean, that new version of mmu3 specifically for core one will be released?

I suppose its enough to make some sort of stand to be able to mount it to the top.

No, the MMU3 unit will remain the same.

Ok, so Prusa only says, that there will be no support for MMU3 now, but in the future, we will be able to use it with core one with official conversion.

I hope there will be at least core one + mmu3 profile in PrusaSlicer.

RE: Core One and MMU3

It's not because the MMU3 doesn't work with the Core One (they have already said they will be keeping the MMU3 as it is efficient as well as reliable), the reason why it's not supported just yet is because they are still finalising the design - ie, how the MMU3 will sit on top of the Core One, the spool arrangement, the PTFE route, etc. Once they have that finalised and all working reliably they will announce and support accordingly.

RE: Core One and MMU3

If I see the latest blog post correctly, there will soon be an official default solution with 5 spools next to the printer.
This is a cost-effective solution where existing setups, e.g. from the MK4, can be used.
The cover of the Core One has to be replaced for this.
You can already see it in the picture, but it will be made of transparent material in the series.
The PTFE hose then comes directly from the top.
What I don't like about it is that the printing chamber will be larger. I am curious how this will affect the possible temperature.
I would have liked the MMU to be attached to the back of the frame as shown in the first pictures and not have to change anything on the lid so that I could quickly switch between operation with or without the MMU.

There will be another version of the MMU3 for the Core One, but it will be more expensive. We'll see whether it comes with an integrated buffer on the printer.
The MMU3 itself will remain, but with a different attachment.
I've decided not to upgrade my MK4S but to keep the MMU3 setup, which works perfectly, and get the Core One as a kit.

If the new solution turns out to be much better I can still sell the MK4S. But if the upgrade costs me as much as I can get for the MK4S, I'll just keep it.
