Buddy Camera

I’m placing my order for a Mk4S to Core One upgrade kit on Monday 24th February. I understand that the camera designed for the Core One has limited functionality at the moment: No continuous video, No ability to record (despite SD card).

Those of you who have one, is it worth ordering one, with the hope that future firmware upgrades will provide continuous video and recording?

RE: Buddy Camera

I've been happy with mine. It does the job, and the picture is decent enough quality. It only does a snapshot every 10 seconds or so, but that's enough to get an idea of whether or not the print is working correctly. Video would be a nice-to-have, but it isn't critical.

RE: Buddy Camera

I don't have a Buddy Cam and wish I didn't need one because I couldn't be happier with my Wyze cameras. But I tried and don't see how the Wyze can fit inside the CORE One housing so I ordered a bunch of Buddy Cams. Prusa said publicly they are working on adding streaming video. Why it's been taking them so long for such basic capabilities, your guess is as good as mine. And miracles happen, so I'm not giving up hope that we will, at one point before the end of the decade, be able to record, which is a great feature of my Wyze cams because if something goes wrong I can go back and try to see when and how things went awry.

RE: Buddy Camera

Was just looking at the wyze cam - magnetic base, which would make for a nice little remote cam inside the core one!

It doesn't fit in the top corner at all (where the Buddy cam is supposed to go)?

I tried but didn't see how to make it fit. But, hey. a new pair of eyes may see something different!

RE: Buddy Camera

I may pick one up when I get a core one. I generally only run my printers when I'm around the house anyways, but like you said - being able to check in on a print via the camera and have a local recording should it be needed is ideal. Previously I've used a Ring Indoor camera, with the printer connected via a smart plug in case I need to cut power! lol

RE: Buddy Camera

Josef has confirmed in a few different places that the Buddy camera will eventually support a live feed with some firmware changes.

RE: Buddy Camera

I had really been hoping for something that is better integrated into the printer. Not using its own WiFi connection (with an antenna that looks like an awkward afterthought), but sending USB data to the xBuddy board and then on to the network via the existing WiFi or LAN connection.

The xBuddy schematics do show a fast USB port -- is it the one where the camera gets connected, or is that a pure power port?

(Of course it's still a question whether the STM32 would have enough computing power and buffer memory left to pass through those image data. But it's a reasonably capable processor, with DMA capability etc. And it has better specs than the processor in Bambu Labs'  P1S, which manages image data transfer at 1 frame/s or so. So we can still dream...  The X1C with its live video stream has a processor with more power though.)

AFACT the USB-C port on the xBuddy is device only, not host. It also doesn't provide power out. I use it on my setup to connect to a RPi4 running OctoPrint.

I also suspect that the STM32 probably doesn't have the overhead to support passthrough (and potential repackaging) of a video stream while also running the printer.
