Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

Hi all, just wondering if anyone else has this problem or it's just me...
I tried the new stuck filament detection (with the load cell) in 6.0.0 firmware. When it's on I get a stuck filament warning on almost every print, and it turns out the filament is actually stuck. I don't know what's causing this, maybe filament gets cooked in the nozzle while it's sitting there and waits for user intervention, or it does some retraction that causes heat creep. I'm guessing these are false alarms because everything works fine when the feature is off. Same gcode, same filament. The problem happens on all toolheads, different print models and different kinds of filament, but at random layers in the print. I could unclog it in all cases by raising the temperature and pushing more filament through, but to do that you have to stop the print.

Anyway this feature seems mostly useless in the current state. All you can do is unload/load the filament, but if the nozzle is clogged whats the point? What you really want is access to the head and ability to change the temp. It needs to save the last position and then give some control over the printer, otherwise there's no chance to save the print. In the current state, supposing it would work, all it does is potentially save some filament when it clogs. Maybe if the bed happens to be low enough you could stick a needle in the nozzle but that's about it.

Has anyone else seen this? There's no mention of it in the 6.0.1 changelog, no chance yet to try it.

RE: Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

Hello 🙂

I have been looking for your question on the forum,,, I am doing a 5 day print in which I had to cancel the first time because the nozzle really got stuck, so this next time I have decided to activate the "Stuck filament detection" function, today When I woke up I went to look at the print and the error "Stuck detection" was on the screen, I had to take out the filament and put it back in, I don't know the reason but I had to insert the filament manually, different from when you do Load filament from the menu, in short, nothing was stuck, everything was fine, a false detection? ,, I have disabled it from Tune and now it continues printing normally, I will try it again in a while because I think this function still needs to be improved...

RE: Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

Hi, I'm printing on a MK4.

I have after printing serval models now the message filament stuck. After contact with support I did the cold pull procedure multiple time.

After 20 min printing => filament tuck. Reloaded and again after a few minutes => filament stuck.

I replaced the 0.4 nozzle by a brand new 0.4 nozzle. checked the filament spool to see if that one could be the cause, and started the new print. After 50 minutes again filament stuck.

Strange that it happens (I recently upgraded the firmware to the latest version. Could that be the problem ? As I can't see any other issue to get a stuck filament. And that is the only thing that has changed.

Regards, Ron

RE: Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

UPDATE: Issue solved

6.0.2 Firmware for Original Prusa MK4

When printing after the upgrade to 6.0.2 I got multiple times that the filament was stuck. I had to reload it multiple times.

The Cold pullback didn't bring a solution , nor cleaning the nozzle or the extruder.

I downgraded back to version 6.0.1 and the problem seems to be solved. The prints are perfect without interruptions of filament stuck.

I suppose there must be a bug in version 6.0.2

Hope it helps people that are suffering from it too.

Regards, Ron

RE: Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

I have very similar issue with filament stuck on my XL for couple of days already. Reading your post it seems to me my problems also started with 6.0.2 firmware. Multiple filament stuck, weird temperature errors, layer shifts during fast movements (sometimes even 5cm after a weird sound).

Did the firmware downgrade solve your issues completely; resp. have you done any additional adjustments/fixes to resolve the stuck filament problems?

RE: Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

I am having a likewise issue as well, specific to tool #4, i have changed the nozzle to a brand new nozzle and confirmed a clean filament path, however upon printing and creating pressure in the nozzle, i am getting extruder skipping and tripping the stuck filament detection. I have attempted with confirmed dry filament including Prusament, Jessie PLA, Atomic, Polymaker, KVP and 3D Fuel with no avail. At this point i am at a loss, tonight i will do a full recalibration of the printer.

Running 6.0.2 firmware and only having this issue with tool #4.

RE: Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

Hi.I have a similar issue with my XL more or less from the beginning (firmware 6.0.0 and 6.0.1). It only happens with PETG, and only after several kilos of printed filament. Initially, I print at 200mm/s (volumetric 17mm^3/s) at 240°C, but as the problem occurs, I have to reduce the printspeed more and more to get around the problem. When I was down to 100mm/s with the first Nextruder, I changed to another tool. Now after several more printed kilos of material without issue I have the same problem here. I didn't try switch of the filament sensor because I don't want to ruin the prints. And of course the problem initially occurs only at nights when I've just gone to bed. Later, it happens all the time.

What changes significantly is the force needed to pull the filament through the tube. In the beginning just fine, it needs more and more force to pull the filament through the bowden tube. On the first tool the external filament sensor seems to also be an issue, because it makes nasty screeching noises. So I suppose that the bowden tubes could be the cause of the problem. Anyone has the same experience?

It would be great to find a solution before I run out of working extruders.

RE:

I had the same problem. This is the first time I have had a stuck filament issue (I'm new to 3D printing and use the MK4).  It sounds like it might be a firmware issues, since there have been several updates the last couple of days.

How do we "downgrade" back to a previous version? Sounds like 6.01 still works fine.

count me in, mk4 - never had stuck filament in 6 months, after last firmware's upgrade I had 6 stuck errors on a single print without really being stuck, especially while ironing. looks a LOT like a bug to me.

Same problem each time I try with PLA.  I have had to disable the “Stuck Filament Detection” feature.  Not sure what the benefit of this feature is anyway.  My MK4 seems to be working pretty well without it except I sometimes get blobs and missed areas on large flat surfaces.  I think this may be a problem with my Overture PLA or with some setting changes I have made for better bed adhesion near the corners of the bed.

RE: Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

Yesterday I started getting stuck filament errors on my XL (manufactured in 2023) for the first time ever after installing the Prusa enclosure, printer upgrades (nextruder idlers, idler swivels, fan nozzles, and belt anchors) that came with the enclosure.  I also upgraded the firmware to v 6.0.3.

I was using the same PETG filaments and g-code for a two-color test coupon I printed successfully multiple times in the past but after the changes I got multiple stuck filament errors in a 50 minute print that occurred at about the same points in each print attempt.  Three stuck filament errors occurred on the first layer and another four errors occurred on subsequent layers.  I got pretty good at unloading, trimming and reinserting the filament at the extruder.

Eventually, the coupons would finish the prints with excellent print quality and bed adhesion and some minor artifacts from print interruptions.  Just before each stuck filament error occurred, I would hear one or two clicks from the extruder.  This even occurred when I tightened the idler tension screws three full turns past factory settings so I don't think the extruder is the issue.  It also happened when the enclosure was left open so I don't think heat is an issue.

Based on my experience and what I'm reading here, I am thinking the issue is with the 6.0.3 firmware (like many others have suggested in this thread).  Since the stuck filament errors tend to occur at a tight turn or end of a pass (not during a start point or during a straight pass), it seems that the extruder is trying to feed too much filament only at these certain points during the print and maybe the 6.0.3 firmware is handling these transitions differently.

I'm going to try re-flashing with 6.0.2 and/or 6.0.1 to see what happens.  I'll loose the control of the enclosure fan and light but at least I'll be able to test the idea.

RE: Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

I reflashed my Xl (prior post on this thread) back to V 6.0.1 and printed the same test coupon (same G-Code and same California Filaments PETG) without any stuck filament errors!  The enclosure was still left open and the idler tension screws were returned to the factory settings.  Because of this result, I firmly believe there is an issue in firmware v 6.0.3 (and possibly v 6.0.2 as stated by others).

RE: Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

I am having the same bug. I tried different PTFE tubes because I had to make custom length in my setup. Even re-printed wheels to my mmu3 buffer. Nothing is helping. And I was kinda frustraded. After print witch I am doing i will try also to re-flash to 6.0.1 firmware and will post if this helped.
Is this bug reported on github in issues that could they fix it ?

I did run across this bug reported a couple weeks ago on github.  I'm not very familiar with the bug reporting process but bryn51 did say that Prusa support stated they are working on the issue.

I have also not resolved the issue fully. Some heads are simply stucking. Used also cleaning fillament, made many cold pulls, any help appreciated.

RE: Stuck filament detection causing filament to get stuck?

I think is resolved the issue with shorter ptfe tubes in my setup. And with removing all custom made fan shrouds and sticking with the original prusa ones on my MK4. Also check if your room is not hot. Mine printer also failed print's becuase too hot ambient in Original Prusa enclosure i had 38 C deegress. I removed the front door and my temp dropped to 28-31 C deegrees. And filament stopped to jam in extruder

I don't have any problems with it on my MK4, only on my XL. This is about the XL, not the MK4.

RE:

This post was writen about XL and MK4 issues from users. Did you try to downgrade firmware to 6.0.1 ? Many users have this problem with firmware 6.0.2 - 6.0.4. The issue is reported on github and in future firmware there should be fix for it. Temporaily fix is to downgrade to firmware 6.0.1.

On reddit user's experiencing this issue have turn off the feature to check if the filament is stuck, and they are printing without issue. Link to reddit page :

Also you could try to clean filament sensors, maybe there are some debris from filament extraction that are cousing this :
