Help with optimizing a 3 color model for dual head XL

Hello all,

Been getting started with my new dual head XL and have been loving it so far! I have been struggling with figuring out how to optimize the following file ( https://www.printables.com/model/1139667-stalker-2-weird-ball-artifact) for my dual head machine. What I am trying to do is use both toolheads for the model and have it so I am only doing two manual filament changes throughout the print. So for example, starting with yellow filament in Extruder 1 and red filament in Extruder 2, then at the blue layer, change the filament in one of the extruders to blue, then back to the original color it had after the blue layer for it to complete the rest of the print. Anyone have any advice about how I can go about this? I just want to avoid using a single printhead and doing six manual filament swaps. Thank you for your help!!!

Best regards,

Tanner

One tool starts and stays red.

Other tool starts as Yellow, swaps to blue, swaps back to yellow.

2 manual swaps.

Hey BaconFase,

Thank you so much for your reply! I am trying to implement the procedure you outlined in your directions but keep running into difficulty when trying to do an extruder swap/filament change on the same layer. It does not seem to allow me to change both simultaneously without printing at least one layer before doing the filament change. I think I am doing something wrong in PrusaSlicer, do you know of a workaround for this or potentially is it something that I have to set custom gcode for? I have a feeling it will have to be custom gcode, but would be very grateful for your input!

Thank you once again!

Best regards,

Tanner

Hey BaconFase,

I think I just figured out my issue! I realized that I can set a filament swap for the non-active toolhead any time in the layer before the tool change which appears to be working (at least in the slicer) I will try and print it using this technique and get back to you if I run in to any issues, I am marking your post as the Best Answer. Thank you so much again for your time!

Happy Printing!
