Priming in thin air

Can anyone explain why the priming starts before the head reaches the print bed? See the attached video for an example.

Because it is extruding at high flow to clear any obstructions and release pressure. If it would touch the bed at this stage, the nozzle would be blocked and the extruder would skip.
