How can a add new materials to Prusa XL Filament list?

Many materials, such as PVA and others, are not listed in the menu when adding filament to the printer. I know they may be configured in Prusaslicer but when loading filament to printer, I am limited to selecting the filament with the closest temperature to what I am loading.

Additionally, even when configured in Prusaslicer, the printer returns an "error" verification that the filament I have specified in Prusaslicer does not match what is in the printer.

Is there a simple was to update the list of filaments on the XL?

Bumping this post!

I also want to know if this is possible or if Prusa could add PVA material profile to the XL?

I know you can just click OK on the error but that is very annoying and not efficient printing.

This is a request that would be best raised on the Prusa XL Github page, where the developers watch.

Or, you could download the source files from github, modify them yourself, compile them and then load your custom firmware (I don't feel confident to do this myself. but others manage to do so.)

Given Prusa's own documentation refers at length to the use of PVA and other soluble materials, it seems appropriate to bring it up here.

I also do not believe it is possible to load "unofficial" firmware without voiding the warranty of the hardware. Not sure if modifying these particular settings and recompiling will trigger this feature but the manual explains how to "jailbreak" the system, albeit with a warning.

I have the same problem with the filament section. There are just not the right filaments in there and having fixed temperatures for the available filaments means that I am stuck with Prusa's choice of temps which is not always the right one (at least for me).

This is a request that would be best raised on the Prusa XL Github page, where the developers watch.

Well... is this section of the forum not called "hardware, firmware and software help" ???

What is the use of a "Help" forum if this is not being watched by the Prusa guys ???

Don't get me wrong, I am very satisfied with the level of documentation and the quality of the printer but not being able to add filament (or at least the documentation missing to do this) is something that is bothering me.

RE:

screenshot of prusaslicer filament settings

In Prusaslicer, set the Filament type to the closest match you can. This is only used for UI feedback and matching /w the selected filament type on the printer - I don't believe it is used for temperatures, LA K factor, etc. This is in the filament settings, advanced tab. You need to enable Advanced settings.

When loading, you want to use the closest filament type you can with the temperature being within the filament's range. If this selection matches the filament type in the slice, it should proceed without warning you about it.

True, the value from PrusaSlicer is used for warning me that I have wrong filament loaded. I love that feature and with the new (5.1.0 alpha) firmware I can now even change the extruders being used on the printer, another great feature.

But the filament type is also used when loading/changing a filament to heat up the hotend. Since there are no entries for any carbon or glass filled type filament (like PACF, PETG-CF, PCTG-GF or PLA-CF) this means I may have to select a completely different filament type.
Having to select PP or Flex for FormFutura's carbonfill (PETG-CG) or for Volcano PLA (high temp PLA) is a bit of a pain in the ...

Yes, I could do this but ... this voids my warranty and it also is kind of a pain in the ... since then I would need to do this whenever a new firmware version pops up.

I too would like to see PVA added.  None of the available choices are close enough to prevent the PVA I used (MatterHackers Build Series) from vaporizing when loading (I used PLA as a proxy filament).  In addition, the soak temperature was too high to print using this material even if one ignored the loading / unloading problems.  Perhaps we should also petition for a generic option that would allow a user to choose the nozzle temp and the soak temp.

I'm going to pile on here too.  What were the beta testers doing all those months to not notice that PVA wasn't an option.   I'd think testing would include soluble supports.  I agree that you can pick something like PLA when loading BVOH, but then you get the aforementioned warning about a possible filament type mismatch.  It's really kind of silly that the printer made it out of the beta period without having tested at least PVA and BVOH since those come with the prusa slicer as stock profiles.  I'm a fan of prusa, I have three prusa printers, but I really have to shake my head this one.

I would also add a +1 to this, one of the main reasons for getting an XL was the multi-material capability, including printing soluble support, so I definitely would like to see PVA listed as a filament type or (better) to have a way of adding custom filament types from within the printer interface without having to flash custom firmware.

+1 but this should be possible to do from the panel ("add custom filament").

I think a good option to add right away would be an "Other" filament type that allows the temperature to be set. That would just solve the problem nicely.

Leaving me with the quest to figure out which filament is "other" and which one is "other".

At least "Other" will be at the right temperature. That to me is my primary concern.

RE: How can a add new materials to Prusa XL Filament list?

I have the same question / request. In my case I would like to add things like :
- NGEN
- TPE (Ninjatek Chinchilla)

And be also able to set speeds. Loading extreme flex materials require a very very slow loading speed. On my MK3's I'm also forced to hold the filament while loading to let it "slip" so I can prevent jamming/buckling of the filament during loading.

This is being worked on, one proposal and discussion is here.  Unfortunately the small screen UI has some limitations which make this harder than you might think.
