#3 extruder keeps failing X offset?

Originally it passed, but my #5 head was missing parts.  Got the parts for #5, re-run calibration and now #3 keeps failing for out of spec X offset.

The only thing I've done is put a sock on all of them, including #3.

Originally the X offset for #3 was -0.93, them -1.06 and -1.1

All my other heads are much closer to zero, usually -.25to -0.4

I cleaned all the nozzles.  Reset the nozzle on #1.  Have re-zeroed the docking on #3.  On #3, I've Taken off and put back on the sock and made sure the nozzle is fully inserted.

What drives the X offset value?  I haven't seen many comments about this failing

Ugh, might have found it.  The 'ribbon' on the face of the exrtuder that acts as a guide for the cable and filament tube was a bit off from where it should be.  I would have thought it would cause more a Y issue, but it must have been just enough to move the head during grabbing.  The #3 X offset is now -0.4x, so well within specs.  

I think I'm all calibrated up now!!!

Seems to me like you've done most sensible things to check. All else I can think is to check the dock is tight in the rear fixing. Maybe loosen and re-tighten? Then calibrate the dock positions again before doing the offset?

Out of curiosity, can you see offsets for every tool from the menu? On my 2-tool, I can only see offset values for tool 2, tool 1 does not show those. Offset calibration is succesfull and calibrates tool 1 first and then tool 2. Does anyone know if the offset values relate to tool 1?

So the nozzle wasn’t screwed in all the way- that didn’t fix it.

The nozzle seemed a different color, so I swapped a different nozzle in, that didn’t fix it.

Looked at the head and checked bolt tightness (all tight), compared head to other heads- nothing stuck out.

Running consistently -1.1 on the x while 2 and 4 are -.25ish?

Question:  Any thoughts as to what a negative X value means for the nozzle in space?

Next steps:

Disable 3 and run calibration to get #5 calibrated to see if it is going to pass, and check its values.

Check the head location and reset rear locating screw, reset docking, then reset the offset calibration.

Swap hot ends from #3 to another head and see what values I get.

Tried all three options and #3 head still won't zero out.  Says it is about a tenth out.

I thought for sure that swapping the hot ends would have an effect- as in the nozzle hole wasn't centered- but changing hotends gave the same result.

Next step is to swap two of the complete heads.

Any thoughts?

What I really don't look forward is the 60 minute wait for the Chat to get me 'help' and then have them bug me for pics and do all the work over I've done already.   Really getting tired of all the calibrations.

It passed- just barely- with a -0.9xxx at one point.  So the X is the left right.  I assume that being too negative means that it is to far to the left when looking at the printer?

Forgive me if you’ve done this but I’d check all the docks are tight in the rear extrusion. I’d undo and tighten. I’d then recalibrate all the dock positions before doing the offset calibration. Prusa could provide more info on this process. It would be useful to know how it all works in the firmware

I was sure that it was something as you mentioned, but it was more basic and the monkey behind the nut was the problem; me. 

I will say that I think that the heads are working loose fairly easily.  Starting to think that there needs to be re-engineered to keep it tight.  I know there are other threads on that topic.

This one is closed, check to make sure the ‘tape’ is within its lines.  Or at least that seems to be the problem. I;m not going to induce the problem again to be more confident.  Find and answer and stop looking. Engineering versus science 🙂
