Z-axis lubrication

So as far as I can see, applying lubricant to the Z-axis leadscrews is discouraged.

With recent prints, when the bed lowers a bit just before a tool change it makes a loud "honk" noise.  I would like to eliminate that.

Is there a lubricant or method that is acceptable for the Z-axis leadscrews on the XL?

Thanks in advance...

ken

RE: Z-axis lubrication

Originally (MK3 era) the leadscrews were said to be best left dry but at some point they changed it up and now they suggest to lube the leadscrews every 500 hours of print time. It's the linear rails that are to be left dry.

For the honk noise you can try doing this along with the lubricant. Might as well check if your leadscrews arn't bent while you're moving the bed up and down too.

Thank you for the links!  I will go through them and see if any help.  I only have 100 or so hours on the printer, but it was a kit so my misaligning something is certainly a possibility.

I am noticing, while doing the lubrication, that a big part of the noise seems to actually be the big piece of sheet metal on the bottom acting as a resonator.  I need to look around for something that might be able to dampen it.

You could try this one

Also, the XL printable parts includes a Z thread greasing tool. It's in the Parts for Maintenance folder.

I saw the dampeners (the side panel version too), I'm going to give those a go.  I totally missed the maintenance tools.

Thanks for your help!

RE:

Where do they get this nonsense from? Never grease the trapezoidal spindles. There is no suitable grease for the rails that Prusa recommends and it is not necessary as they are greased and this should last for 2 years.

I apologize for the incorrect statements on my part. Unfortunately, I can no longer delete the post. But it's true that you should grease the threaded rods on the XL, but on the Mk4, for example, it's still the case that you don't grease the threaded rods. That confused me. There is no grease recommended by Prusa for the rails and you just shouldn't use the Prusa grease.
