Suggestion for the Replace Toolhead Function
Original Problem:
My 5 toolhead XL printer had 1, 2, and 3 set up for PLA and 4 and 5 set up for PETG. I was printing a part that I sliced in PETG to use toolheads 4 and 5. When I started printing, I had problems with toolhead 5, so I unloaded the PLA in toolhead 3 and loaded my PETG into that toolhead. I made sure that the printer knew that toolhead 3 now has PETG and not PLA.
I then printed, but in the menu, I replaced toolhead 5 with toolhead 3. Unfortunately, it would never print properly after many attempts. I finally figured out that it must be using the wrong temperatures.
My Assumption:
I assumed that when I clicked the “replace” button on the screen of the printer, the printer would use the settings in the gcode for toolhead 5, but simply replace toolhead 3 for toolhead 5.
I now suspect that when I clicked the “replace” button, the printer replaced toolhead 5 for toolhead 3 but also used the settings in the gcode file for toolhead 3 which was set up for PLA.
If this is the case, can anyone please confirm it?
Suggested Improvement:
If a user selects the “replace” feature, it should be followed by another screen with two options:
- Replace the old toolhead with the new head and use the settings for the new toolhead.
- Replace the old toolhead with the new head but keep the setting for the old toolhead.
I feel this would give the user the ability to temporarily correct a problem at the printer without having to reslice a new gcode file.
The way I had to correct the problem was to go back into the designer and change the properties of toolhead 3 to PETG.

crickets... I hate crickets.

Sounds like a good suggestion. I think you should post it here though if you want it to gain any traction; https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/issues

Razor, I wasn't sure where the best place to submit this was. Thanks for the pointer.

No worries, glad to have helped. Taking through things like this here is helpful, but all the dev action starts “over there”. 😉

RE:
The way to test it is simply monitor the temperatures show on the display, if you have the pretty, but useless image of the component showing, push the control knob and it will show you another screen with live info along the bottom of the screen. You can change which variables are shown by going to Settings, User Interface, Footer.
