RE: Stringing Issues

I just checked the slicer again about this and there is a Filament Idle temperature - and it is set to 70C which seems (if anything) too low and not too high.

According to comment this is only valid when "ooze prevention" is turned on (which it is) and there is a "Temperature variation" which has "-110C" in my case.

Odd - what now? Is it now 70C or is it 215-110C?

Interesting though. I think that I will try it without the 70 and rather use the -5 which is claimed to be the default even though it is 110 and I have never changed it.

RE: Stringing Issues

I did see the mod and have ordered the parts already. That is another thing I wanted to test.

Even though I wonder about the "copper brush" which was suggested. Doesn't it wipe off the nozzle after a while?

Hmm. Isn't this exaclty the opposite what this "dog video" does with the filament g code? Or is that a different thing?

One thought from Unicorn3ds post…

You never stated your settings for “Retraction on tool disable” per extruder.

If you don’t retract out of the melt zone when the tool is parked you will get stringing no matter what you do. You have to retract at least 11.7mm.

Toothbrushes are also made from nylon 😉
TBH I went with the Bambulab things because I thought they looked cool and are designed specifically for this purpose. I'll swap if I find they need to be replaced too often.

Bambu lab has their own nozzle wipers? please share a photo of your XL setup using them!

RE: Stringing Issues

I posted my make with the printables model:

https://www.printables.com/model/678703-prusa-xl-tool-change-wiper-brush

So far they work well, but I haven't tried brass brushes to compare. I would say they'll probably last a while. Don't expect them to clear off serious gunk, but some filament creeping up the nozzle and trailing strings will be removed. Noticeably better prints than before. Wipe tower actually makes everything worse now, I have stopped using it entirely.
You need 3x "Heatbed Nozzle Wiper - A1 mini" (come in packs of two). I printed the bed wiper designed by the same guy as well, but haven't attached it yet.

RE: Stringing Issues

I like the @baconfase ones because they just clip in, no extra tools required.  but your ones with the bambu part looks nice for sure.prusa needs to have brushes standard on this thing, it's so annoying when a left over string ruins your perfectly good print.

RE: Stringing Issues

Thanks to the Prusa Support I have finally resolved the issue of stringing and globbing for my setup:

It appears that my printer needed a tension belt adjustment.

Was pretty finnicky and needed to use different phones until I got proper readings, but now it works great! Trying in fact now to not use the wipe towe to see if that is even still necessary.

RE: Stringing Issues

I bought my xl fully assembled but when I did the MK3->MK4 upgrade on my two MK3S+ printers, I used my good old tension meter instead of the phone.  I don't know if if the belts on the is the same as on the MK4 though.   the sound thing seemed prone to error, but I'm glad you got it working.

RE: Stringing Issues

sound can also missleading. longer belt section = lower frequence at same tension.

when adjusting by sound the length of the vibrating section has to be defined.

In deed? Yeah the phone usage was ... very tedious and it surely leaves a good margin of error in many ways.

What tension meter if I may ask? Can you point to a reasonable one? (I have seen pretty expensive things there, but somehow that seems a bit over the top 😉 ).

Many thanks!

RE: Stringing Issues

Yes, I agree. Even though they gave a quick how to in the video (which was really helping), it might have been good to e.g. show the park position from the top and not from the side (as that makes you estimating where it might have been parked).

I also had the feeling that there might have been some kind of harmonics at work as to my ear the sound sounded a bit different left and right, but the program claimed it was the same. Shrug. In the end I think what counts is the result and it clearly has improved the situation.

This is the one I've always used for the MK3, and again on the MK4.   I haven't had any issues.  it does need to be printed in prusament petg though.

RE: Stringing Issues

One last thing which occured to me now that I wanted to print this:

It is mentioned to be used for the MK3/4 - not sure if this is transferrable in any way to XL. If anyone from the Prusa crew is reading this - do you know?

I'd guess that even if the belt would fit this, as the length of the axis is different, it is likely that a different force would be needed?

RE: Stringing Issues

correct belt tension is usually a requirement of the belt used.

i3 and xl use the same belt from what i can tell.

I honestly don’t know.  I bought my xl fully assembled.  I would hope this works for xl or there is a variant for the xl.  I’m not keen on the phone thing

RE: Stringing Issues

Agreed. Using the phone seems pretty finnicky and leaves opportunity for error.

Another addition: To get to 100% no stringing I also need to pre-heat/dry the filament. Not very surprising. I suppose living in a tropical clima  might have some impact here.

RE: Stringing Issues

I am adding this here in the hope that this helps someone - lot's of tips which I have found and which I used to make it work for me.

So for the stringing and dripping - I had now many more extensive tests and complicated models and I am now in a good state with no stringing and most other problems gone.

  1. The filament really needs to be dry. In my case I have to print from the dryer (as I live in a place with high humidity)
  2. Use the new slicer 2.7.2
  3. Nozzle wipers (for testing I have installed on one nozzle a brass brush and on the other 4 the silicone wipers. I can still not decide which one is better. I thought that the brass wiper would collect more "dirt" but that didn't really happen)
  4. Check the belt tension (the phone tool is ... unfortunately more luck and fiddling than I wanted though - if anyone has something more reliable: Let me know! Maybe this works here too?)
  5. It of course is depending on the filament...
  • TerraPoly PLA matte 215C / Bed 50C
  • MatterHackers Build 212C / Bed 50C + special "dog video" G-code (G1 Y360 E-1 F24000)

Plus - optionally (?)

  • As I added my exhaust cover - it might have an impact on the overall temperature, etc.. No guarantee, but I have definitely seen changes in behavior depending on using the fan in there, etc.
