Reducing/removing the lift at the start of a tool change/end of layer

Ok, I'm getting the hang of this thing and have found one issue I'm trying to work out.

At the end of a layer before the tools swap the bed drops and you get a vertical whisp of filament sticking up. No worries on the last layer but after a full 23 hours of printing it builds up on the nozzle and leaves blobs.

I remember seeing a video and post about this but for the life of me can't find it.

Is there a way to eliminate this or have it move back, then lift??

You're thinking of 3DPrintDogs' YT video.

PS 2.7.0 introduced ramped and spiral zhop to mitigate stringing from travels and layer changes, and if you're using a prime tower it makes the vertical zhop tool change movement from there and at the same spot so the vertical string shouldn't be an issue anymore. PS 2.7.1 fixed a few bugs with those new movements. So unless you're printing without a prime tower, their custom gcode isn't as necessary anymore. But some people had much worse stringing issues than others so ymmv.

I'd suggest getting some brushes by your parked tools for other nozzle buildup. There are plenty of variations out there these days.

RE:

Try increasing “Retraction on tool disable” to about 11.5mm. It eliminates the string left after the bed drops and it prevents drool while parked. No need to do any other movements. It also can make it unnecessary to use a priming tower for many pla formulations. Also, the actual temps at the melt zone are too high. Lower your temps to around 200 for pla and 215 for PETG. This does not mean the material is actually that temp, but per the behavior of the materials the settings are not the actual expected temps.

Try increasing “Retraction on tool disable” to about 11.5mm.

Since 2.7.0 this filament setting has been defaulted on and set at 20mm.

Since I use my own settings I would never see that they changed it. 20mm seems a bit more than needed. Did they update the material presets?

That is odd. On 2.7.1 and downloading the 2T profiles today, the value is 1.2mm, however when hovering the setting, it says default is 10mm. Think there is something mixed up there in their settings ^^

There is a lot of that all over PS where the tooltip default doesn't match the lock icon default and I'm not sure which is "correct." At least for infil-perimeter overlap, I've changed it to tooltip-default because lock-default resulted in gaps.

I didn't check every single default filament but seems Prusa's set all *@XL filaments' "Retraction on tool disable" to 20 through Filament settings overrides, not Printer Settings. Seems like a weird decision to me but whatever works I guess. Maybe foreshadowing for how they'll modify PS for better toolchanging stuff? If all relevant info is in Filament settings then its easier to re-use the whole colorpainting->specified tool for toolchanging things? idk
