Head LED too Strong

Hi!

I just upgraded my XL single tool to dual tool.

I see that now there is a powerful LED under the printing head or head holder. This was not in the Single tool configuration. What is it? what is it for?

The problem that I have is that the LED is so powerful that blinds my camera, and then I cannot appreciate printing issues if they arise.

Is there anyway to tune that LED?

I agree (for the same reason)!  There needs to be an On/Off or better yet a brightness adjustment added to the Control (and/or Settings) menu.  Got to be just a half day task for one of the firmware developers.

Also, in the pre-release Prusa blogs about the XL there was a discussion of availability of 2 button on the tool head (beneath the blinking blue/green/yellow lights).  Jo mused about making the function of those buttons user-assignable (giving the example of filament load/unload functions).  An update with more details and timeframes would be nice.

So the LED is just for illumination of the print? perhaps it was intended to help the camera and without brightness control is generating the opposite effect.

Yes, I've seen no indication of another purpose, and there is no mention of a toolhead camera from Prusa.  The light is great for human eyes to see the printing process in detail, but as you say blinds any print bed camera I use.  Cranking up the ambient light level in the room helps.

BTW, the light is in the toolhead assembly, not the toolhead dock.  As you gain experience with the new configuration you see that the toolhead light will light ahead of the dock arriving.  (It's like the toolhead is signaling the dock to grab it next.)

RE:

A good old fashioned photographer trick is to SHADE THE LIGHT. If it's too bright, print a shade.

As far as a control for brightness, that would require another pin on the microprocessor. They may not have one. The light may be just on and off, or just on for that matter.

I looked at doing installing a shade but was quickly discouraged at the prospect.  The clearances for such a shade are limited.  I look forward to you sharing your solution.

As for requiring an other microprocessor pin.  It's also possible that the pin is an analog output and not a digital one.  Has Prusa published the circuit diagrams?

Try using a sharpie on the light. You can get around 40% or so obscuration.

Well, duh on me!    BTW, that is also available in the tuning menu when a print is active.  Thanks!

Cheerio,

thanks!! turning it off helps.

As far as a control for brightness, that would require another pin on the microprocessor. They may not have one. The light may be just on and off, or just on for that matter.

I dont think another pin is required for implementing dimming. most probably the LED is attached to a pin in the uC or port expander with PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) capability. That will turn on/off the LED very fast to achieve the desired duty cycle. This is the most common way to DIM this type of LEDs.

I have created a feature request for Tool Light dimming: https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/issues/3813

In case anyone wants to pass by.

Hope they put a intensity level in this setting.
