Pause and raise bed function

What we definitively need is a function to pause in between layers and raise build plate to see if print has sticked to bed and everything is fine.

Right now we need to wait for hours just to see that print failed...

This used to be a built-in function but they removed it. Also apparently pausing in can cause visible layer lines as well as stopping the new layers made after you pause it to not bond successfully to the older layers.

I guess this is one of the trade off's.

some printers use transparent vats, and you can see through the sides earlier in the print than we can with the aluminium vat, but the aluminium vat offers better rigidity and longevity...

I listen for the 'Plink' noise as the FEP skin parts from the pad area on the build plate during inter layer tilt, this indicates that the print has adhered to the build plate!

note this noise usually disappears as the print gets taller and the model print area reduces

Yesterday I had a plunk noise and this morning nothing adhered to the build plate.

I think the solution would be to machine out a 10x50mm hole on the side of the tank, fill it up with transparent epoxy resin and we will have a window, what do you think?

@dario-f

I like the window idea, I may try and get that done.

I think the issue with raising the platform to show if the print is sticking is the backlash in the ball screw and the tank. The platform only goes up during a print and I don't think that it can reposition itself within 0.025mm. Also the tilting tank may not be able to put itself back into the exact same position every time. Added together, the tolerances may be too great to reliably print at ultra-fine detail. This could explain all of the defects john-f29 mentions in his post.

I like that Idea,

however it may make cleaning the VAT/tank , more difficult

I wonder if we could mill a slot from the inside to the outside, with a recess to drop a piece of glass in from the inside so we can seal it, level with the inside surface of the tank, to make cleaning easier

They do make transparent aluminium.. but that is so spendy.

I don't have an SL1 as that was a bit too spendy 😀 for me, I did buy the Elegoo Mars which has the same problem with seeing when a print is sticking to the bed and not the FEP. One suggestion I made on the facebook page for the next version of it was to put a strain gauge/sensor on the lifting arm to sense the resistance when separating the print from the FEP, and if it is coming away too easily then check the build manually. Would need some feedback from the exposure to let the firmware know roughly how much resistance there should be, or an extra lift before exposing each layer to do a comparison between cured and uncured for each layer. Might even be possible to do with a firmware update and reading the stepper motor current in the same way collision detection works on the MK3, or is that only for missed steps?

+1 on the strain gauge idea.

Perhaps you can glue a small mirror to the inside wall of the tank?

Depending on the depth of the resin, it could give an early heads up.
