Hardware improvement suggestions

I opened this because I don't find an SL1 repo jet.

Please feel free to add your own suggestions or share your opinion.

My fourth print is now running on the machine and meanwhile, I've noticed a few weak spots.

  • Resin accumulates on the flat top side of the print platform. With slanted surfaces, as with the Elegoo Mars or the Anycubic Photon, the resin could runoff.
  • After printing, the print platform is wetted with resin up to a few centimeters. This makes it difficult to grip. A removable grip tool would be very practical here. This could possibly be achieved with a few matching grooves in the print platform.
  • UV light emits under the door of the CW1. If you would insert a step there, the door would be better positioned and leak-proof.

  • The tank for the CW1 is a GN 1/6 190mm. This is no standard size and the tower from the example files does not fit in there at all. With one of the usual 200mm tanks, this would work much better. Maybe I can construct an adapter to use a 200mm one.

if you remove the CW1 basket, does the EIFFEL tower fit in on the build plate?

Joan

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

The example model is called the Petrin tower. A 140mm model. I don't have the basked in the tank and the tip of the tower sits on the "propellers". Maybe it is intended to wash such large models in the basket, but that's a bad design.

I did some measurement. The CW1 has 135mm space for washing on the platform. All objects bigger than or equal to 135mm need to be removed first and washed in the basket.

Some suggestions from the perspective of building the kit

  • The filter assembly seems needlessly complicated and doesn't really make it all that easy to replace the filters either
  • The space under the main board is too narrow - if you need to move cables around (very likely) there's a high risk of slicing a cable on the main board mounting plate
  • I find it very difficult to hold the build platform securely after a print without getting resin everywhere - sloped top and taller mid section would help
  • Seems really easy to slam the lid/cover down by accident - the hinges feel super high quality but don't soft close if you drop the lid when shutting. Rubber edging could help prevent damage as well
  • The etched marks on the vat don't ever seem to correlate with what the printer asks you to fill up to
  • I took a file to the metal ring piece that holds the FEP film as it felt a bit sharp to the touch

I think some kind of leveler would help here too, as I've noticed a bit of a discrepancy with the vat markings and what the printer says too, and i'm wondering if that's because its not entirely flat. Also wouldn't mind some kind of rubber gasket between the vat and the printer as another of layer of drip protection, i usually use the plastic drip protector, but i have forgotten once or twice... or twelve times.

I also wouldn't mind some markings or a guide on the orange door so when we attach the hinges, we don't have to spend a hour on it wiggling it back and forth (i may have missed something obvious, but figured i would mention it anyway) to get it to sit right. And lastly, while i'm not sure this needed, and temp sensor for the resin maybe useful.

RE: Hardware improvement suggestions

Hi guys and girls,

I have drawn up a new print bed in Fusion 360 because I am running into the same problem that resin stay's on the the top of the print bed. I have sent it to a CNC milling company to be milled out of aluminum.

When Its done I will sent it to a surface grinder to grind flat and then anodize it.

When it works I will let you know and I will c if I can produce more.

Regards Ron

PS the forum took the picture out of proportion it looks lower then it actually is, I took measurements form the original and added the slope to it.

@ron-k4

Interesting idea.  I have a small CNC mill and may try making a similar part if I go with a Prusa SL-1.
