RE: MK3.5 Bondtech Extruder & Mosquito

Initially, my X-axis failed.  I replace the x motor.  I got success on XY, but my Z axis failed.  That is probably due to the Bondtech.   I went past it and texted my heat bed and hotend heater.  The bed is fine; Hotend failed.  I replaced my thermistor and hot end heater.  It still fails and will not heat part 250 and failed.

I am going to just go ahead and upgrade to MK4.

Z Axis can be fixed by the method I mentioned. See where the Z Axis limits out and set that under the superuser settings.

Even if the hotend doesn't pass you can still print.

I got 2 different heaters that I will be testing to see if they pass. Besides that, I believe Prusa is working on aftermarket hotends issues for the revo. It may work for this one.

I probably wouldn't upgrade to the mk4 just yet.

how is it going. I read the stream. Is it all working? I would like to upgrade my mk3s bear.

Yesterday I finished the MMU3. Printed all the parts  and assembled the MMU3.

It is going very smooth. It would be nice if I am sure I can upgrade my mk3s bear to.

Tomorrow I will order the 3.5 upgrade from Prusa. I did the first step by upgrading my MMU2s to a MMU3.

With a trick Chris Riley explained at his YouTube channel about the power and move a 5 volt cable to an other port.

If know this earlier I had less headache.  I ordered the official update for that (little pcb).

If the upgrade of my Prusa mk3s fails, I will buy a Revo. The Revo looks great but I first git it a got with the Bondtech and Mosquito magnum.

I have ordered the 3.5 upgrade. Where can I find a list with the parts to print?

RE: MK3.5 Bondtech Extruder & Mosquito

Hey all,

It seems that the Bondtech Extruder + Mosquito setup is a success. Here is what I did and some of the issues that I faced.

  1. Extruder Heater
    • I still haven't been able to pass this calibration test but I am in the process of getting a new thermistor (tomorrow) + a dowel pin to fit inside of the Mosquito. Adding the dowel pin may help with heat dissipation since there is no longer empty space in the thermistor cartridge bore. See image.
    • I purchased this Bondtech Heater w/ a ferrule connector and I was able to pass the heater test with the sock option on. You can also get it from Slice Engineering.
  2. Loading & Unloading Filament (e-steps)
    • Changing the e-steps to 800 815 seemed to have a proper load and unload sequence, and this got everything printing nicely.
  3. Linear Advanced Settings
    • I was having underextrusion issues around the corners of the print. At first I thought because I was printing too fast but lowering the speeds did not help. In the custom g-code for the filament, I changed the default value of .05 to .04 and that made a world of a difference. See the underlined boldened value. *this may only be an issue for the Atomic Filament I use, so I'd advise to test out a print before changing it.

{if printer_notes!~/.*(MK3.5|MINIIS).*/}M900 K{if printer_notes=~/.*PRINTER_MODEL_MINI.*/ and nozzle_diameter[0]==0.6}0.12{elsif printer_notes=~/.*PRINTER_MODEL_MINI.*/ and nozzle_diameter[0]==0.8}0.06{elsif printer_notes=~/.*PRINTER_MODEL_MINI.*/}0.2{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.8}0.01{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.6}0.04{else}0.04{endif} ; Filament gcode LA 1.5{if printer_notes=~/.*PRINTER_MODEL_MINI.*/};{elsif printer_notes=~/.*PRINTER_HAS_BOWDEN.*/}M900 K200{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.6}M900 K18{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.8};{else}M900 K30{endif} ; Filament gcode LA 1.0{endif}

{if printer_notes=~/.*MINIIS.*/}M572 S{if nozzle_diameter[0]==0.6}0.17{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.8}0.12{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.4}0.27{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.25}0.85{else}0{endif}{endif}

{if printer_notes=~/.*MK3.5.*/}M572 S{if nozzle_diameter[0]==0.4}0.035{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.5}0.025{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.6}0.02{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.8}0.014{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.25}0.12{elsif nozzle_diameter[0]==0.3}0.08{else}0{endif} ; Filament gcode{endif}

After printing many cubes to test which settings are the best that's what I concluded with up top, I did not have any issues with heating during any of the prints. I don't think there is a need for custom firmware. But I would love to see Prusa have 3rd party approved firmware without having to void warranty on the board.

For those wondering if you should update to the 3.5, do it. I haven't had any issues and its nice having all my printers on Prusa Connect.

Thanks for the great info. I am waiting for the 3,5 upgrade set from Prusa. Still 2.7 weeks to go 🙂

FYI it looks like Prusa has the 3.5 upgrade in stock now. Their website still says 3 weeks wait time but they shipped mine out in 2 days. I ordered it 3 days ago and it's in Germany right now. I also ordered the 50W heating element from Slice Engineering. I should have everything next week and report back how it went.

I talked around two weeks to the Bondtech support about the Prusa MK3.5 with LGX Shortcut. Thats the answer:

"We will look into the possibilities of doing it now that Prusa have released their firmware, but it will likely take a while to adapt it, if possible.  Since the printhead have no accelerometers I'm not sure how we will measure the resonance frequencies yet.We probably will have find an average value and hard code it into the firmware somehow.  We will try our best do it, but can't make any promises yet. "

I also asked about input shaping:

An accelerator could be an option, but since its a bed slinger, it will not measure the bed resonance I guess. Its possible to tune with a print file. That's an easier option and seems to give good results. We will see.

Did bondtech customer service mention any update on them release their mk3.5 firmware variant @investigate?

The last word I got is they are still testing.  It will void your warranty.

RE:

When did you hear that? I was told that voiding the warranty might not be necessary as you can make the changes under the superuser settings in the Prusa firmware. Like @EvoDesigns did it.

About a month ago from Bondtech.  I am not sure how you update the Axis length as the superuser.  I upgraded and it failed the Xaxis calibration.  It also failed the temperature on the hotend.  I tried to fix it for 1-2 weeks and gave up waiting.  I am going to sell my mosquito and Bondtech and just upgrade to a Mk4.

You're doing something wrong then.

Read my reply on how I got the hotend to work. 🙂

I'll give you $40 for the hotend?

RE:

After a few nights sleep I lay the mosquito to rest and bought a revo hotend. I finished the first 3.5 upgrade. I had to make some mount's because off the bear frame. Now al is done and I start printing. The quality of prints is amazingly good. Also the speed of movements is super. I wil upgrade my second machine also with a revo. Mosquito is good but not supported. With the latest firmware you can switch to revo.

It is going on eBay. I never could get the thing to register a temperature on the Thermometer, even after trying your suggestions above. It may have been the HT thermometer.   I have a better printer now.
