MMU3 Physical Buffer Size

MMU3 Physical Buffer Size

This may have been answered, but I couldn't find it.  Why is the buffer so big?  Seems like a huge waste of space beyond the buffer wheels that is never utilized.  What am I missing?

when a filament is unloaded after use, the  extra filament goes back into the buffer, rather than causing the filament to go back to the roll, where it may spill over the side of the spool, and cause knots.

You don't have to use the buffer - I never built mine for the MMU2.   You do have to accommodate the loose flament though;  I simply suspended my spools above the unit and let the caterary take care of it.  Others used auto-rewinding spool holders, I tried them too and they worked OK but didn't really fit my workspace.

Look up auto-rewinders on printables, there were plenty designed in the early days of the MMU2 and they will work with the MMU3 too.

Thanks, I'll look into the auto winders, the buffer consumes a fair amount of space, winders may be a sweet solution.
