I've now uploaded a 'kit' of parts to help with mounting the MMU buffer on the underside of the enclosure hinged lid: https://www.printables.com/model/845863-mmu3-mounting-kit-for-original-prusa-enclosure

It includes:

  • Mounting feet that take the place of the buffer plate holders
  • Filament guides with multiple feed points for the left and right corners
  • PTFE clips that grip the PTFE tubes a little tighter, with options for fixing the clips to the enclosure
  • A revised thermometer mount to allow for the left-mounted filament guide.

Looks great Chris. Will give it a try, once my MMU arrives. Might still take some time, since I ordered in march this year.

In the meantime I am assembling the (un)official Prusa drybox. I am modifying the fixation to the enclosure such that:

  • the fixation + drybox is compatible with the hinged lid mod
  • the drybox is fixed horizontally in positon (x-y-axis)
  • the drybox can easily be taken apart when opening the lid (z-axis)
  • the position of the drybox on top of the enclosure is adjustable

Will upload everything to Printables when everything fits.

I've changed my setup slightly - I now have the buffer on top of the lid, rather than slung from the underside.  I realised that the lid could no longer be used as a shelf anyway, since it had to be cracked open to load filament, or fully opened to access the MMU unit, so there was no real benefit in having the buffer inside the enclosure.  Using the same brackets and PTFE tube lengths I've now mounted the buffer on top, which means I no longer have to open the lid to load filaments, and the danger of the tube from the MMU to the Nextruder fouling the buffer at high Z positions has gone.

In this configuration, the bracket set that centres the buffer on the lid is preferable to the set that moves it 30mm back, since this gives a gentler bend radius for the pipes between the buffer segments and inside of the enclosure.

The 10 pipes virtually fill the hole in the rear centre of the lid, but I will probably now make a piece that replaces the blanking plug and allows 10 pipes to pass through without any gaps.

I went with the Mohawk mount.  It works well for me.

During my first test, my filament box worked perfectly with the inserts.

I have uploaded the insert here on Printables.  Whether it will work permanently remains to be seen.

Maybe it also works without a filament buffer.

I will use 5 individual drying boxes with an insert to prevent tangling. I don't know yet whether it will work.

I gave up using the Prusa buffer almost from day 1 on my MMU2 as it took so long to load.  I'm using a Lack enclosure with a Mk 4 and MMU3 but will be upgrading to a Prusa enclosure.  I use a set of filament auto rewinders (loads of different versions on Printables) and they are really good.  You can change a spool and be pronting again within seconds.

This looks really interesting and what I was considering myself - love the self contained capability. Are the stl’s all on printable as I could only see the spool holders and not the filament guides or buffer brackets?

Interesting topic as I just ordered an MMU3 for my MK4 soon to be MK4S in a Prusa Enclosure.

What are the lengths of the PTFE tubing included in the MMU3 kit?

I had a repbox installed behind my enclosure and run the PTFE on either side through the trapezoidal cutouts on the rear plexi. Works great.

I love seeing some of the interesting solutions on here for drier box mounts. I've been curious though and been searching around for an answer - for those of you that use the buffer but don't print daily, are you concerned that filament just sitting in the buffer will not be dried? Do you just accept the fact that the first 3ft or so of filament wont be as dry as it shoud be? (I have nylon loaded in one filament slot, but I maaaybe print with it once a month if that). Would be cool if theres a mod for the buffer that encloses it to allow for drying with a desiccant pack.

I am currently in the process of assembling the MMU3, to be combined with my MK4, and at the same time printing the (un)original heated drybox. I saw a mod for integrated auto rewinder for the drybox, but not sure, whether to use/test it, due to some concerns.

So my current idea (nothing to show yet) is to try modifying the drybox by raising the metal pipes and integrating buffers between the pipes and the bottom of the drybox. Accessibility might be an issue, though.

Btw: Can anyone tell me the retraction length of the MMU3? How much filament do I have to consider, if I where to design buffers for within the drybox?

I have the dry box set up and the auto rewinders and they work great.  Getting rid of the buffer was the best thing.  That made it a pain to load filament.  Now I just load them straight into the mmu it couldn't be easier.

There is one more part that you can print that snaps onto the tubes that fit into the mmu to make them straighter.  This also makes loading the filament easier because it doesn't try to load at an angle.  You can find it on printables.
