Assembling MMU2S and MMU3 upgrade kit

I have an unassembled MMU2S kit and am thinking about ordering the MMU3 upgrade kit. How should I go about assembling since my MMU2S kit is not assembled?  Just buy the upgrade, print the new parts and use the MMU3 instructions?

if your mmu3 is for a mk3S or mk3S+ printer, that is correct.  the Mk3 Kit includes the daughter board to upgrade the electronics of the MMU3, including the new power and data cables, and the ne blades for the filament cutter, plus other items.
don't forget the new filament sensor for the Printer

The links below from the MMU2 disassembly instructions lists what parts you need to take out of your MMU2S kit.

mmu2s-disassembly-Summary

mmu2s-buffer-disassembly-Summary

Take out only the parts that are listed in the two summary links.    The rest of the parts need to be put back in the box and put aside somewhere you won't get them mixed up with the parts from the new kit.

RE:

I am at this same point, too. I have both a completely unassembled MMU2S (purchased in 2022, still in the box) and the MMU3 Upgrade kit (purchased a few weeks ago).

My thinking was to follow the guidance for the MMU3 upgrade kit, but build the MMU2 up to the first point of reference in the MMU3 upgrade kit using the MMU2 instructions.

i had a brief online chat with someone on the Prusa site (assuming at least 1st level tech support), and thier guidance was to completely build the MMU2S, and then apply the upgrade.  There was no explanation offered for this.

Unless I can get some compelling reason to build out the MMU2 first and then apply the MMU3 upgrade, I am going to follow the path outlined above. (Build the MMU3 using the MMU3 instructions (and using MMU2S instructions as needed) and swapping out MMU2s parts as instructed.)  Other than verifying MMU2 functionality and gaining familiarity with the device, “pre-building” the MMU2S, only to have to immediately disassemble (partially) to apply the upgrade seems a bit illogical.

I will add to this post as I progress.

RE: Assembling MMU2S and MMU3 upgrade kit

Note:  This MMU2S-to-MMU3 upgrade will be installed on an existing functional MK3S+(from kit) that is in a PrinterBox PrusaBox enclosure with a PrinterBox Spool Tank mounted on top of it using the PrinterBox MMU2/MMU3 integration kit for PrusaBox.  So, there is that one more level of complexity, but it does mean that I can bypass/avoid all the guidance concerning the buffer. (But keeping an eye out for any items that may need attention to the change).

As far as I am aware the only parts of the MMU2 which are retained for the MMU3, are the metal components, the Finda and the MMU controller board and possibly the Selctor face plate with the M5 insert...

So I Would simply build the MMU3 from the beginning

RE: Assembling MMU2S and MMU3 upgrade kit

Joan,
Reporting back in…

Build - Done!

MMU3 is working, but we have some calibrating and learning to do.  We have successfully printed a few bi-color objects, done many filament changes and are slowly getting our “sea legs”.

Challenges:

1). The Auto-rewind spool holders are very cool, but I can see that we will have to pay close attention to tension and rewinding right now.

2). The PrinterBox Spool Tank does a great job of minimizing the area needed to house and support (feed/retract) the filament, but at the cost of easy access to each spool.  For example, if the filament rewinds off the spool, getting in there (the Spool Tank) takes a bit of effort and contortionist moves.  Just not much room.

More later…

Thank you,
I appreciate updates like this.

Moderating takes quite a lot of time, so I don't always see all unmoderated posts.

Happy printing.
