Firmware update problem after MMU3 upgrade

I have just completed the MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade and all seems to have gone well. However after having updated the MK3+S firmware, I have a problem updating the MMU3 firmware.

When I attempt to flash the firmware for the MMU3 unit I get the following error in the report log:

Flashing Original Prusa Multi Material 2 & 3 Upgrade (bootloader), looking for VID/PID 0x2c99/3 or 0x2c99/4 ...

The Original Prusa Multi Material 2 & 3 Upgrade (bootloader) device was not found.

The Original Prusa Multi Material 2 & 3 Upgrade (bootloader) device could not have been found

The menu screen on the printer also displays:

MMU FW Update Needed prusa.io/04504

F1:0 FS:0 F?

Reset MMU Disable

MMU FW Version is incompatible with printer FW. Update to version 3.0.1

I have contacted Prusa for help but thought someone could point me in the right direction in the meantime.

I'm guessing the printer is ON 3.13 have you tried going to old firmware updating the mmu then go to new firmware

Please help me out by downloading a model it's free and easy but really helps me out https://www.printables.com/@Hello_474427/models

RE: Firmware update problem after MMU3 upgrade

Thanks Hello,

I went back to FW Ver 3.12.2 on the printer and the MMU is back at FW Ver 1.0.6. I can't flash the MMU to Ver 3.0.1 it gives the same report as before.

I'll see how this works with the previous FW version, it should be backward compatible, according to Prusa.

I would have thought Prusa would have had a work around on this problem, maybe it's early days yet?

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

I also had an issue where PS couldn't seem to detect the MMU when I was flashing from MMU2 to MMU3 firmware. IF I recall correctly this is what worked for me:

"Start the flash process, and while PrusaSlicer is looking for the board, hit the reset button on the MMU2. It should then find and flash the board."

Thanks, I eventually figured it out, took awhile but all is up and running now and printing away at the moment. It's slightly different in how it operates from the MMU2S but it really is a great improvement over all. I had to load the E3D firmware (I am using REVO 6 hotends) to overcome the thermal calibration, after that it was plain sailing.

What do you think was the problem? Mine is still not working. Do you think the older version helped?

Same problem here.

I can't even jump to 1.0.6 from 1.0.5-300
Get the same error message that the bootloader device can't be found.

(with 3.12.2-5713 in my MK3S+)

in my case:

jumping back to 3.12.1-5713 with 1.0.5-300 worked fine

I'm also having the same issue. I successfully updated my MK3s+ firmware to the revo 3.13.2 firmware but now I can't update my MMU3, I get the same error. Any ideas to a solution on this while keeping the newest firmware? Prusa firmware has been throwing thermal anomalies at me every few prints. I can do a few 30 hour prints no problem then randomly it will throw thermal anomoly and the print fails after 24 hours

RE: Firmware update problem after MMU3 upgrade

Here is what worked for me... (With the help of Prusa Support)

I first had to do a factory reset on the MMU  ( https://help.prusa3d.com/article/factory-reset-mmu_510075)

Then I stepped back to firmware 3.11 on the printer itself.

Support sent me the following MMU flash file:  MMU3_3.0.1+837.hex

Once it was able to flash the MMU, then I re-flashed the printer (per the HEX file Support provided, which I think is a sub-update or BETA from what is on their download site at the time of this post)  prusa3d_fw_MK3S_MK3S+_3_13_2_7080.hex

After flashing - I was able to turn on the MMU in the settings - the MMU re-homed its position.  No blinking / no beeping.  Seems to be functional now.

#thanks Sebastion and Alfredo from Pusa Chat Support !

RE:

I really wonder if anyone really bothered to test this MMU2S update at prusa ?

I just did the update (finally) from 3.12.2 + 1.0.6 to the (currently) latest version of 3.13.2 + 3.0.1 and it for sure did not go smoothly as is quite obvious already based on above comments.

My problem was that the MMU2S 1.0.6 firmware upgrade did not work at all and therefore I went back to 3.11.0 and did the factory reset to MMU2-board. This still didn't allow me to re-flash the MMU2 board with the latest version of 3.0.1 firmware.

Then I read again the above comment:

"Start the flash process, and while PrusaSlicer is looking for the board, hit the reset button on the MMU2. It should then find and flash the board."

and tried a variation of (having the advanced log open) ---> pressed the MMU2 board reset button and immediately after that I klicked the "Flash" button. It took a few tries to get this avrduded process to actually see the board and the flash to succeed.

Anyway, I did not see ANY MMU2 specific flashing guide in the MMU2S zip-file and MMU2S flashing procedure is certainly not going in a logical / easy way.

Why are the existing MMU2S users still handled as second-class customers ?

I'm in the process of upgrading my MMU2S to MMU3, but haven't found the time to rip apart my MK3S+ as of yet.

Please, do fix the MMU2S -> MMU3 upgrade procedure & guide to a usable level.

RE: Firmware update problem after MMU3 upgrade

I like the concept of the MMU, but since Bambu Labs released the AMS - it is much more efficient than the MMU (IMO).  I could never get my MMU2S working properly.  I did upgrade to the MMU3 (rebuild kit) and it does seem to be working reliably; however I do no like the buffer - even with the improvements.  Its almost like a work-around.  With exposed filament, PLA breaks when sitting for extended periods of time since it is exposed in the buffer.

If buying a new MMU3 for the MK3S+ or MK4, its $299+Vat (U.S.)   The AMS is $349 (no VAT) and is nicely packaged.

If only Prusa would develop an AMS style (closed system) buffer for a price point that is similar... (hint-hint)

I was having all kinds of issues with the MMU firmware update until I tried a different usb cable.  Then it worked!

RE: Firmware update problem after MMU3 upgrade

Hi,

I finished the assembly of he MMU3. But the Flashing it doesn't work. Message as in previous messes : can't find the port to flash it.

Tried:

 - multiple usb cables,

- pushing the reset in the emu at al moments in time during the search prcess

I'm using  MAC OS Sonoma 14.5 and tried to do it with Prisasliser v.2.7.x and 2..8.0 but without success.

RE: Firmware update problem after MMU3 upgrade

I had contact with the support team.

flashing the mmu3 didn't go.

I used

- Mac running 14.5 OS

- Ubuntu 22.x

- Windows 11

 all with

- multiple usb cables

- different versions of the prusaslicer

- pushing in all combinations the reset button too

and the main conclusion is that the board is failing. New controller board will be supplied.

Regards, Ron

RE: Firmware update problem after MMU3 upgrade

FYI - I was having the same problems as everyone else.  Reseting the MMU didn't help.  But I was finally able to get the flash to work successfully by having the entire machine turned off, start the flash process and immediately turn the machine on.  After a couple tries to get the timing right, the firmware flashed correctly.  This was on a Mac with a USB-C to USB-A adapter on an MK3.5 running 6.04 and an MMU3 clone from Aliexpress.

RE: Firmware update problem after MMU3 upgrade

Same problem here. After adding the MMU3 to my MK3S+ and printing successfully for many months, received the email about doing the firmware upgrades.

I followed the instructions to upgrade the printer to 3.14.0 (which I did first, successfully) and then the MMU3 to 3.0.2 (which failed as mentioned by others in this thread).

Does anyone have further insights on a solution? Do I need to roll the printer back to an earlier version and, if so, which one? Once I've done the rollback, should I try doing the MMU3 upgrade before the printer upgrade? (That is, should I have done it in this order to start with?)

Like others, I've thrown a fair amount of time at this, and just want to start printing with the new firmware!

Many thanks,

Nick
