Who needs PVA/HIPS if you have PETG?

Hello,

The idea is not new. PETG and PLA don't really bond together well. So why don't we use our MMU2/s to print real multi material and safe some money?

Here is my successful test:

What have I done special:

That's it. The support is really easy to remove and the result on the overhangs is really good. Even the small items are getting build on the PETG support without any issues. The orange PETG filament was used on purpose to see where and how the support filament get stuck. For production purpose I'm using clear PETG.

Try it yourself, report the results back.

Very interesting.  I might have to try it, but it seems easier to just use more soluble filament such as PVA.

for sure it would be easier but soluble filament also costs so much that its worth the few minutes to clean up a printer from traditional supports afterwards.

Correct. The initial thought to do it with PETG is coming from the price for PVA. Good one costs you $80/kg. Clear PETG you can get for $20-30. That's a big difference. Especially if you're printing something which requires big support base (like organic model), it's always nice to have alternatives.

I was surprised how well it actually worked. PETG support was really easy to remove. It was partially brittle. If I lower the nozzle temp for PETG to 230C, it would get even more brittle.

Of course, if you really need support to dissolve (for some shapes it's required) then this would be the wrong material. But for regular overhang/base support it's really good. And PETG is really easy to handle/store, something which most people have already laying around. So it's definitely something which went into my tool box.

You can also cut down on PETG use/tool changes by restricting the PETG to the interface layer only and using regular PLA for the bulk of the supports.

I guess that is true, but my time is more valuable than $36-40 for PVA.

Where do you get such cheap PVA? And PVA support is also not falling apart by itself 😉

In google and sort by the lowest price.  I find 30-40 for a half KG is a decent price.  I have found it as low as 19.99.

HIPS is about the same price but for a whole KG.

ok, for a half kg. I mentioned $80/kg and your price looked like you've found something for half of the price :-). Just wanted to make sure I don't miss any great sources.
