Top 5 issues of MMU2S

Hi

I have just ordered a MK3S+ printer. I'm an engineer with experience in 3D printing, but not in the prusa world. The reason I went with Prusa is because I wanted to get an upgrade from the ultimaker original, but I did not want to spend 5k on a raise3D.

To get the two print head functionality other printers have I will need a MMU2S, right?

I did not find many reviews on it and therefore I'm a bit sceptical on how well it works.

Can anyone summarize a little bit the thoughts of the community on the MMU2S?

- What works well? What are the top 5 commonly known issues with the device? For what purpose should you use / not use it?

I don't have time for a lot of try & error and bugfixing. I therefore will only get the kit if I can expect it to work reliably.

Thanks for your help.

I would get the printer and use it for a while. Then get the mmu.

Prusa are working on upgrades for the mmu at the moment.

If you wait a while. You will get the latest version

Regards Joan

The MMU is not the same as a double extruder with actually two nozzles. If you want to print with soluble supports, it is possible with MMU but it is very challenging and horrendously inefficient compared to any decent double extruder. The MMU is best when you use it as multi-colour unit rather than actual multi-material. Multi-colour prints can look awesome.

Unlike the Mk3s which is really plug and print, the MMU is really rather for people not afraid of trouble shooting and properly dialing in things. It can be tricky to get it work reliable but once you've managed it can work quite fine. It is super wasteful though (material and time). If you don't want to trouble-shoot and want a plug and print tool, the MMU is not for you in my opinion.

The list of possible issues is long, doesn't really make sense to list it without a concrete case. Usually it has something to do with dialing in sensors, stringing, blocking, filament path friction and handling errors.

Thanks for your answers.

I don't need more information, you already confirmed what I somehow expected but hoped it would not be true.

I want to be able to print with 2 different materials, but not because of the color. If it were possible to avoid changing spools, I would take it, but it's not needed.

The MK3S+ will therefore be only an intermediate solution, if there is no upgrade for 2 dedicated print heads. I would have ordered the XL with 2 print heads, if it were available.

If your use case is just two materials (eg 1+soluble support or rigid+flexible) I would look for a decent dual extruder, they are quite affordable. There are some things to look out for like oozing etc but in general they should be easier to use than any filament changer and there is much more offer out there than for tool changers.

I have, but I could not find it for the MK3S+. If there is no solution around, I will need to switch. Most printers with dual extruders are >>2k€.  The Prusa XL seems to be one of the exceptions.
