@chocki

Neat way to measure, thanks for the tip 🙂

I would expect unspecified durometer to be 50D, as 30D are usually sold as “extra soft” and 70D as “firm”.

Let me know how it turns out when you get them installed 🙂

RE: Where to get Sorbothane feet in Europe

The sorbothane hemispheres arrived today, I had literally no more than 5 minutes to try them before going to work, but will do a better check in a couple of days. but initially look to be 14.5 mm high, compressed to 11 at the back and 12 at the front so look to be in the ball park, quick test movement of the printer axis and they really do absorb the vibration, I thought the existing squishy feet on the chopping board were good, but this is even better.

Need to do some proper testing when I get the chance and update this post.

Oh, I fitted them dome facing up from the desk then placed the granite chopping board on the domes.

I'm trying to capture the phone data to show the difference, but so far the two apps I've tried want paying to be able to save anything.

So far the sorbothane feet isolate any vibration really well.

On the printer I have vibrations from 1Hz up to 20 Khz when I place the phone on the granite chopping board, but on the table next to the printer the only vibration I get is when the filament feeds from my reverse bowden setup, the sorbothane appears to isolate the printer and granite chopping board from the table really well.

I can still hear some noise if I put my ear onto the table, but I don't know if that is just vibrations in the air acting on the large tabletop surface, but all sound going into the floor looks like it has gone as downstairs I can't hear a peep from the printer anymore.

@chocki

That’s my backup plan 🙂

I would prefer to avoid a granite slab because I’ve built a closet for printing and the height there is limited. When my Mini arrives, I’ll install the MMU2S and I want to service it easily. I also want it to look nice 🙂

Anyway, I’ve found a Sorbothane seller on eBay and have ordered 8 x 1” 50D and 4 x 1” 30D (for the Mini).

Hi, please share a link to the ebay seller. Thank you 🙂

Here you go: For £8.69 this one is a bit of a no brainer!, I'm actually going to order some more for my speakers downstairs. 😀

But remember, this is for a 12Kg load, which in my case is printer plus granite chopping board with filament feed off printer

When placing the hemispheres, put the back ones close to the edge eg 1cm away, but the front two will need to be moved further back from the front since more weight is on the rear, you will need to measure the height front and back and adjust to get the same height, but this is not critical.

@chocki

Thank you, but i already bought an ugly terrace plate (18kg) for 3€ 😀

how much is the weight of your granite plate?

edit: found the answer (5,86kg)

@chocki

I’m glad you’re impressed with them too 🙂 It’s crazy how silent mesh bed leveling became with the hemispheres absorbing all the fast Z move forces. I’ll buy an extra set for my HP MicroServer as well, not because it’s noisy but to protect the hard drives from external shocks (of which there are a few every day with a toddler exploring how things sound when you throw them...)

I’ve also thought about installing some acoustic foam in the top of the closet, and I was thinking about putting a bitumen sound dampening mat (primarily used on sheet metal, such as in cars) under the table, but really there is no resonance left after the Sorbothane was installed.

@max-distortion

I’m afraid those are waaay too small/soft for your 18 kg terrace plate. With an MK3S on top you’re looking at slightly over 24 kg, or 6 kg per foot. They won’t be able to absorb anything if they’re already fully compressed by the load. See my post https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-user-mods-octoprint-enclosures-nozzles-.../where-to-get-sorbothane-feet-in-europe/#post-194219 . It seems something between 1.5” and 2” would be the right size for you, depending on the durometer. Alternately you could supposedly double the number of feet.

Hi, I got the sorbothane. How do I attach them to the base of the Prusa i3 MK3s? I know there are some designs on the internet. Which is the most effective in dampening the sound?

@peter-c20

I use these (x 6):  https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3082188

They work really well and look excellent. Unfortunately that’s another wait if you haven’t ordered the T nuts and bolts yet... maybe you can source them locally to save time. I much recommend using those insert-type ones described on the page, so you don’t have to disassemble the ends of the frame to install them.

RE: Where to get Sorbothane feet in Europe

@peter-c20 - I went with these feet on the printer, but used felt on those and mounted the printer on a paver slab. The slab is mounted on the Sorbothane pads. This couples the printer to the paver mass which greatly reduces vibration, but decouples the paver & printer mass from the table underneath, greatly reducing resonant vibration.

Thanks. Those T nuts take too long to arrive. Hope this works as well:

@bobstro

Do you mean:

a) printer->Sorbothane ->paver slab->enclosure's top surface or

b) printer->paver slab->Sorbothane->enclosure's top surface which may deform the Sorbothane  pads due to the heavy weight of the paver

[...] b) printer->paver slab->Sorbothane->enclosure's top surface which may deform the Sorbothane  pads due to the heavy weight of the paver

This. I purchased sufficient Sorbothane pads to support the combined paver & printer weight according to the manufacturer's recommendations (plus some). I wound up with 9 disc feet on a 17x17 inch paver with Mk3. The Sorbothane pads do deform, but this actually levels the printer a bit if the shelf isn't perfectly flat.

I see. Is it dead silent now? Have you compared arrangements a) with b)?
