Volcano Firmware!

hey

I wondered if anyone had a hex file to share for my MK3 - allowing the volcano mod to not drive itself in to the bed when Z calibrating!

I know it needs 8.5mm less of play thanks to the extra height in the volcano block - but compiling the source is beyond me..

Ive tried in vain to find someone who might want to share - if you could let me know where to look, Id be very grateful

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

you don't need a different firmware for the volcano. Just print this mod: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2989361

Martin did a really good job! My assembly instructions can be found here:  https://www.thingiverse.com/make:667280

Then install it an use STOCK Firmware! I like to keep it that way to maintain an easy upgrade path with prusa firmware.

I just installed my volcano yesterday and the print quality is the same with a 0.4 nozzle x as before. So now i can focus on the speed dail in:-)

I am having the same problem. I have installed all the hardware no problem but having problems re-righting the file 😫. Did you manage to get sorted? Were you able to send the edited file?

RE: Volcano Firmware!

Hello Andrew,

Do you have the MK3 or the MK3S as at them moment the MK2.5S/MK3S has 5mm Z travel over the MK3 but the firmware still has the same limits. This means you have a 50/50 chance of getting an MK3S working with a Volcano fitted with no changes to hardware or firmware as there is a couple of mm tolerancing in the original Prisa design.. See the reply I made to a recent comment about my mod.

Hello Travis,

Yes the Z axis parts are necessary for all versions including the MK2.5S. The Volcano heater block is 8.5mm taller than the stock V6 one. The Z axis parts raise the Z-Motors by this 8.5mm to enable the full travel. It is a result of this that makes the X-Carriage replacement necessary so that the cable outlet is lowered and as a result will still clear the frame at maximum Z.

Without the mod on a MK2.5 and an MK3 fitting a Volcano reduces the Z travel by 8.5mm and requiers custom firmware. With the MK2.5S and MK3S as the S variants gain 5mm this only reduces the Z by 3.5mm right at the edge of the physical tolerances of the printer and it is 50/50 as to weather you could get away without modified firmware. However as the MK2.5S and MK3S have that extra 5mm a future official version of the firmware might make use of it and as such this should not be relied on.

Regards,
Martin

RE: Volcano Firmware!

Does anyone have a precompiled version of MK3S firmware (preferably 3.9.0) for the volcano hotend as my existing hotend gave up the ghost and I can't print the parts for the mod until I successfully install a new one (which is the volcano hotend I have on order).  Please message me for sending info.

Thank you

Robert

RE: Volcano Firmware!

I tried compiling my own Volcano firmware based on 3.9.0 for MK3S and the HEX file is only about 3/4 of the size of the original.  Is that normal?

I won't know if my firmware compilation will work until I install my new volcano hotend that I just built today.

Robert

Hello Robert,

I believe that is normal as it won't include the options for other languages. I can't confirm though.

@martin-w15

Thank you...I installed the volcano hotend and flashed my own firmware compilation and that resulted in my display being garbled, so I reverted to 3.9.0 official release for now.  Not sure what happened, I may have made a mistake compiling or the instructions I used my not be completely valid for the latest builds of the Prusa firmware.  I would love to try your mod but neither of my printers will print anything right now.

RE: Volcano Firmware!

A note about modified firmware for MK3S printers:  Over the Christmas holidays, I had bought, built and installed a new MMU2S upgrade for one of my printers.  I had first successfully installed it on my printer WITHOUT the volcano hotend and modified firmware.  It worked fine, but when there was another issue with the printer it's self, I decided to try the MMU2S on my older MK3S printer WITH the volcano hotend and modified firmware.  As a result of this, my SD card reader was no longer working and there was an error message popping up about not being able to find the "language switch" every time my printer restarted.  So, after lengthy chats with Prusa technical support, it was decided that the MMU2S board had probably damaged the EINSY board AND the LCD display on the printer.  I was later able to verify that the LCD display wasn't damaged by plugging in an old one that I have with a broken knob on it, which everything else worked as it should.  I have since ordered and received a new EINSY board, LCD display and will soon get a new MMU2S board as well (under warranty).  I just installed the new EINSY board and left the LCD display as it is for now, as everything works fine on that.  The printer now has the latest stock firmware, but when I went to flash my previously modified firmware for the volcano hotend (based on 3.9.0), the screen became garbled, so I ended up reverting back to stock for now, rendering the printer useless until I either reinstall a stock hotend or find/compile firmware for the volcano hotend or try modified parts to compensate for the 8.5 mm loss of Z height.

Like anything with 3D printing, this is a learning experience for me.  Fortunately, not quite as expensive because Prusa does a great job of backing up their products and they helped me pay for the boards for the printer and freely are replacing the one for the MMU2S, even though that might not be necessary, as that seems to work not too bad on the other printer which I put it back on (no issues to the board or LCD on that one!).

Just prior to replacing the EINSY board today, I had thought about just trying to flash different firmware to it to see if that would have resolved the language switch error and saved me the trouble of replacing the board, but I thought I would just go ahead and replace the board anyways since I had it and it may be a slight improvement to the one that was in my now almost 2 year old MK3S printer.

My advice is to NOT install an MMU2S upgrade on a printer with modified firmware as it may damage your EINSY board too!
