Upgrading my MK3S+, what to do first?

While I don't think it makes sense to do a full MK3S+ to 4 upgrade, as it costs almost as much as a new MK4 and i would rather have 2 complete printers for just a little more $$

So, where can I upgrade to get a little more out of the MK3S+? Specifically , faster printing. My understanding is that one of the limiting factors is the E3D V6 hot end, and that is maxed out at 15 mm^3 of filament. I think the Revo V6 has a little more flow, but will the mechanics of the MK3S+ keep up? I know it's not a Core-XY, but I hope I can squeeze a little more out of it...

So, where to start?

Speed versus quality and strength is the trade off - generally slower is better.  If you want a higher throughput buy a second machine.

You’re right Diem but, at the same time, I think that the MK3+ kinematics can give more than 15mm3/s. I don’t know about the Revo, but a Mosquito Magnum hotend can handle up to 30mm3/s with a 50W heater cartridge.

Of course, if you want to go really high ( say above 50mm3/s ), then the MK3S/+ or MK4 aren’t the right machines.

Those high speeds are possibly OK for printing trinkets but not for anything functional.

You could also consider a Revo V6 with the 60W heater core together with the HF nozzles. Imho the Revo V6 ecosystem is a good upgrade for the MK3S+ in itself and it is supported by the firmware.

I have the strong suspicion that a Revo hotend with a 60W heater would give trouble with Prusa’s new thermal model and latest firmware versions.  I’d stay with a 40W heater cartridge to be on the safe side.

A Mosquito hotend delivers up to 25mm3/s of filament (according to the manufacturer). It’s a great hotend, but really expensive and the conversion to a Mk3/S/+ isn’t as straightforward as with a Revo. It requires additional printed parts, so that makes it  more expensive,although IMHO the Mosquito it’s worth every cent. Easy nozzle changes (even in cold, if you use a plated copper nozzle) and definitively no more heat creep issues printing PLA in summer.

I have had excellent success with my Mosquito, and have put on in my Mini also. I don’t consider it expensive for the super service I have got from them.  I am now running a Diamond tipped nozzle and the combo gives great parts and production machine performance.

Nothing against your suspicions, they are justified when you compare the history of user experiences with newer MK3 firmwares after v3.11. I have exchanged the 40W heater core in my Revo V6 with a 60W heater core a few weeks ago. I had seen that E3D themselves recommended the new firmware for this and gave it a try. So far everything went fine on the printer. I installed the firmware for the 60W variant, did a factory reset deleting all data and then performed the setup which went smoothly. I have not yet tried the HF nozzles or HF filament with it but "normal" printing went fine so far and had no thermal anomaly alarms.
