unusual request re pyro pen and wood engraving

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone has already done some work on this that could help me.

I have a load of wooden labels to burn text into, and was wondering if I could use the i3 mk3 to move the pyropen around to write the labels. When I do it myself, the results are disappointing, and my hand aches like mad. The pen is at 400°C, but the handle is cool enough to attach securely to the extruder.

It's controlling the movement to produce the letters that challenges me.

Do I just have to learn loads of gcode, or is there a shortcut that I could feed the txt, speed, z height etc. to which would produce the goods.

Thanks for any advice.

Paddy

The first layer Z is going to be unpredictable.  You should be able to improvise a carrier with a long travel spring to allow the pyro pen to accommodate to the surface...

Then it would be a matter of fixing the wood precisely and firmly.

The text/design is effectively just a single layer print.

So, it's do-able but you risk damaging the printer in the process.

It would be easier with a blowtorch or a laser but there are even more hazards there.

Cheerio,
