Tips / things to know before installing Octoprint?

I've finally caved and will be getting a Raspberry Pi to use Octoprint.

To my understanding you don't HAVE to install directly into the Einsy board but can connect via usb. I'm assuming this means I'd just need a power source for the Pi, correct? If I'm totally wrong just let me know.

Is there anything specific I should be looking at when picking out the board or is the Raspberry Pi 3 W fine? I've noticed I can get an entire kit with a bunch of extra stuff (you can never have too many SD cards!), would that be worth it? I might be using the wifi capability so I can check in on it from work so I want that option open for me, too. And that means a webcam as well. Is there anything special I should know when picking one out, or is it fine to use the ones listed as 'approved' from Octoprint's website?

Thank you!

Buy a Raspberry Pi 3B. Don't buy the Zero W.

Make sure to turn off the "RPi" setting in the printer's menu.

Connect via USB, and plug the Raspberry Pi into the wall with a USB power adapter.

Install Octoprint from https://octoprint.org/download/ and follow their setup instructions.

That's really all there is to it.

neil.e stated a solid bit of advice. Only thing I would add is get comfortable with the install and usage BEFORE adding any plugins. This allows you time to test your setup and install before adding complexity.

Confirm, neil.e has told you all you need for a working setup.

"Make sure to turn off the "RPi" setting in the printer's menu."

Is this related to the Zero W pie? Why would you turn "RPI" off?

Thx,

Michael

Just a reminder that the standard Octoprint download does not yet support the latest Raspberry Pi 3B+. You need a nightly build from http://gnethomelinux.com/OctoPi/nightly/

Proud owner of a Mk3 that is producing very nice prints. There is room for improvement as I learn more about it, but so far I am very happy.

RPI is the GPIO connection to a PI... if using a Pi 3 B, most would connect via the USB, and thus don't need the GPIO based connection.

I installed a RasPi-0-W. I simply wanted video capability so that I could remotely monitor the progress of prints. The installation is straightforward and relatively easy using the Prusa installation instructions. The video works great through Octoprint. I have the camera mounted to the bed as most have done.

If RPI is on then the USB connection is disabled.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner - some crazy stuff happened the past day.

Thank you all so much! I will get the 3B and go from there. 🙂 I dont plan on installing plugins until I'm familiar with it and need it. I am excited to get this going for sure.

RE: Tips / things to know before installing Octoprint?

I wouldn't do it. The power supply on the Mk3 is close to max, and the RPi 3B+ draws considerably more power than the Zero W originally (and mistakenly) supported on the Mk3 board. While it might work, if you get into a situation where the printer is drawing maximum power and the RPi gets busy (e.g. issuing Octoprint commands while streaming video), there's a good chance either the RPi or Mk3 will not receive adequate power.

People do it. Some run for months or years without us hearing about problems (though they may still happen). It's just not recommended. Consider also that you don't want to make the tool (the RPi running Octoprint) you use to monitor a critical device (the Mk3) dependent on that device. Separate power sources are recommended.

RE: Tipps / Wissenswertes vor der Installation von Octoprint?

@bobstro

Danke für diese Information. Werde für Pi 3B und LED-Streifen gesonderte Stromversorgung verwenden.
