octopi difficulties
hi all
so I think I have done quite well, and things seem close to working, but not quite.
I have my RPi zero w prepared.
I have the octopi image downloaded and burned onto SD card
I edited the supplicant file with my wifi network name, and PW. and have installed into the entsy board
and enabled the RPi port via the settings menu
RPi connects to wifi, I can see this on an app on my phone. and I can direct my web browser to it's IP address.
and have gone through set up
however the state in the left column is always offline.
when I try to connect, I can follow via the terminal tab, it sends hello messages, but times out. changing state back from connecting to offline
I'm a little stumped as to what to do next

Sorry to break it to you, but OctoPrint is not recommended on the RPi Zero W. All of the Prusa documentation on using it is old. This comes up regularly, and many people who have tried it report that performance is dismal.

I hate to disappoint again, but while OctoPrint can copy gcode to the SD card, it is doing so via the USB interface at serial speeds. Transfers are very, very slow. They run in the background, and it does work, but a 6-10MB file may take an hour. I went down this same path, thinking transfers would occur at SD speeds, but the printer and RPi are only connected via USB at 115Kbps. Unfortunately, there's no viable SD emulation solution.

so from what you can tell does it seem like I set it up correctly, but this limitations of the hardware, and network speed are rendering it useless,
or are you saying that there is a problem, but essentially not worth troubleshooting it as the end result is not really usable

I believe you will have problems because it Only support Pictures and Video formats,not support other files formats, Picture support format :JPG, RAW, CRW, MRW, ORF, RAF, X3F, NEF,KDC, PTX, PEF, CR2, TIF, MOS, K25, MEF, MPO,SRF, SR2, DNG, ARW, RW2, BAY, DCS, DRF, NRW RWL, SRW, 3FR, PNG, BMP. Video support format :AVI, MPG, MP4, MOV, MTS, ASF, 3GP.

Somewhere on this forum someone posted that they had used Toshiba FlashAir successfully.

I used a Toshiba FlashAir W04 16GB card for nearly a year. It worked but was finicky and slow. It finally died which is when I discovered that I could assemble a RPi 3B for similar cost and run OctoPi. OctiPi on a proper RPi is very powerful, and far superior IMO. It just requires a proper RPi and will not work well for writing to an SD card mounted in the printer. Some people are very happy with the FlashAir card, so YMMV. Your wifi setup will factor into usability.

Small note:
Don't buy a Pi 4 just because it is the latest and greatest.
Buy the Pi that is most suited to the application. For most, at this point in time, it will be the Pi 3B.
Pi 4 is a power hungry little beast, with serious cooling requirements. It is my choice (4 GB version) for a very serviceable internet browser.
Note: Any case for a Pi 3 WILL NOT fit a Pi 4. Board layout is different.

I have to admit - you will enjoy it.
For the 4, I would definitely recommend a separate power supply; preferably the official one (they screwed up the standard, so most USB C supplies won't work).

The Pi4 runs fine - the only drawback is less cases to choose from on thingyverse. Go for it...
Dump that Zero it really sucks.
