Anyone have any favorite nozzles?  I’m printing a lot with the Protopasta HT PLA Carbon Fiber.  I think I’m going to burn through brass nozzles at the rate I’m printing right now.

RE: Nozzles

I have switched all my printers over to tungsten carbide nozzles. Some by 3D Maker Engineering, some by Spool3D. They're all great. Didn't require any changes to any of my printer profiles.

RE: Nozzles

I normally use the tungsten-carbide as well.

However, as of this time the Prusa has a brass one.  I have a new tungsten-carbide nozzle but just have not installed it.

A while ago I had a filament jam and attempted to clear it with one of those filament cleaning bits, which broke off in the process.  Try as I might, I could not get the broken off bit piece out of the nozzle.

I have had the same nozzle mounted on one of my MK3 printers for 2 years and print all materials with it. Still works like the first day.

I like these and I wish they had more sizes than 0.4 and 0.6. I bought those but the 0.8 I bought from Spool3D in Canada. A bit pricier but they come in a variety of sizes.

One word of warning. There are other "tungsten carbide" nozzles floating around but if you read the description carefully, it's an alloy, or just the tip is tungsten carbide.

Good point, Fuchsr.

I see that TC nozzles have arrived already at Ali-Express. Reputable vendors there like Triangle Labs/Phaetus sell them now. Not cheap though. In fact, a bit more expensive than North American manufacturers. For European users though, you save on shipping and the Customs clearing fees that you have to pay ordering from USA or  Canada, so there’s a reasonable overall saving if you purchase Chinese TC nozzles from Europe.

Problem for me is that, although they doesn’t say it on the main title of the sale, it’s clear from the pictures that those nozzles aren’t made from a single block of  TC.  You have to scroll almost to the bottom of the long page to read :  “body is copper alloy with nickel plating; nozzle is TC”.  The welding between the threaded part and the hexagonal is quite ugly too, I gather that the manufacturing process is still being tuned.

Not saying that these nozzles can’t perform well, but I’m not keen at all on designs with brass/steel bodies and hard tip inserts, be it ruby, diamond or TC.

If you just print pla the brass nozzles are fine.

I use zodiac pro nozzles https://zodiac3d.com they are made in Austria in a very high quality and precision. I think they are hardened tool steel with tungstendisulfide coating or so. Not 100% sure, need to check with EDX. They work with anything, from pla to carbon fibre PA. No wear after many kg of carbon nylon filament. Highly recommend, but rather expensive at 50€ per nozzle but a lot better than nozzle x or E3D hardened steel nozzle I used before.

Making the switch to Vanadium. Tried the Slice Vanadiums on my other printer which is an IDEX. So impressed the Prusa will soon be running one. Lifetime warranty against wearing out and I find I didn't have to change any settings from brass nozzles.

I have to agree on Vanadium.

Milling TC is basically impossible. You can only grind it.

I am not a fan of TC nozzles, as the finishing on the inside is generally not as good as with coated hardened tool steel, because of that materials problematic manufacturing capabilities.

Mine lasted almost as long.  It finally started jamming.

3d maker engineering for the win. Zero problems, print anything, no profile changes, no worries, no regrets. Should last forever.
NozzleX has some sort of undesirable funky coating to make it work, so a cold pull will destroy it. E3D is also putting the NozzleX out to pasture, with something new just around the corner.

RE: Nozzles

Forever is a long time and the length of use will be depended on the mount of Abrasives you use when printing.

Forever is perhaps an overstatement, but at least the nozzle survives the printer. In any case, I have serviced the MK3 a few times in the last few years, and the carbide nozzle still looks like it did on the first day.

There is not doubt they should outlast most nozzles.  Like my vanadium nozzles, my tungsten are 3 years plus and near 4 and going strong.

RE: Nozzles

TC nozzles have been in 'sold out' condition at 3Dmaker for many months. That leaves Spool3D in Canada as the only supplier of TC nozzles currently in stock?. Do you know folks any other supplier/manufacturer out there?. I'm not considering models made from a metal body and a TC tip.

3dmakerengineering.com was out of stock when I was shopping. You can choose on the order page to get an email when back in stock. I waited about a week.

I have been through a dozen or more spoils of cf, and about the same with fg. Still like new.

Nice stuff.

But Vanadium has very low thermal conductivity, as low as hardened steel.
Thungsten Carbide is similar to brass.
