Bondtech/Mosquito-issues

Hi! Yesterday I upgraded to the following: Bondtech LGX extruder - Mosquito hotend - Bondtech Heatlink 300*C thermistor - Bondtech 24v 50W heater cartridge.

Did a factory reset, ran through the calibrations, and flashed the recommended firmware. Tried a 1st layer cal. today, but ran into a few issues:

- Extrusion: It can not(!) lay down a coherent line, only bits´n´bobs as if it´s missing steps or something. Do I need to do an E-steps calibration?

- Temperature: Got a "MAXTEMP" warning, and the temperature also fluctuates like a *mf*, both when heating up to desired nozzle-temp, but also when that temp i reached. Is this thermistor not compatible with firmware, or can I calibrate this thermistor somehow?

Thanks in advance for all replies!

RE:

I did that upgrade recently on my MK3S+ and no issues so far.  There’s one difference, though. I didn’t change the heater cart or the thermistor, I simply installed in the Mosquito the Prusa 40W heater and thermistor.

Now, if I understood correctly, you did the reset and afterwards you flashed the firmware ?,  According to instructions, it’s the other way around :  first you must flash the Bondtech modified firmware and then perform a factory reset, choosing the option ‘CLEAR ALL DATA’. I missed that final step the first time and I got massive,  meaning MASSIVE, under-extrussion.

If you did the upgrade according to instructions, maybe you should perform a PID tuning for the hotend because that new heater of 50w is more powerful than the stock unit of 40W and a PID calibration tells the printer how to maintain the temperatures in the hotend as stable as possible, according to the power of the heater cartridge.

Anyway, I have the impression that the huge fluctuations that you describe are too high to be attributed solely to an incorrect PID tuning. Maybe you’re right and that Bondtech thermistor is not a direct replacement for the E3D stock used by Prusa.

Have you contacted Bondtech support ?

Update: I ran three PID-tests this evening - original heater & Bondtech thermistor - Bondtech heater & original thermistor - both original.

The tests with the original thermistor passed with flying colors and steady heating/cooldown, and the one with the BT thermistor showed major temp. fluctuations and a failed PID-test.

Safe to say that either the thermistor itself is broken, or I need to address something in the firmware. Any thoughts?

I think I did it in the correct order, but suddenly I´m not that sure - looked like some massive under-extrusion here as well 🙂

RE: Bondtech/Mosquito-issues

Prusa uses the E3D stock thermistor, which is an encapsulated Semitec 104GT-2. Instead, your Bondtech uses a Semitec 104NT-2, not exactly the same although, looking at the resistance/temperature tables, both look similar.

According to the Bondtech info for their thermistor you should customize Marlin2.0 with the following code :

#define TEMP_SENSOR_0 5

AFAIK Prusa MK3 series printers use Marlin1.0 and not Marlin2.0, so I’m not sure if the instruction above applies in this case.

I suggest again that you contact Bondtech support. They helped me with the firmware flashing/under extrusion issue.

RE: Bondtech/Mosquito-issues

Just been in touch with Bondtech support, and they also conclude with a broken thermistor.
And there's no need to customize the LGX-firmware for the MK3S+ any further.

My local shop sent me a replacement thermistor which will arrive today, so hopefully I'll be up and running again soon.

Regarding the extrusion issues I might've just not tightened the tension-lever enough 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'll address that when the temp.-issues is sorted.
