Bondtech Direct Drive upgrade

Hello!
Would you say that the BondTech extruder is worth it?

I am talking about this one > https://www.bondtech.se/product/prusa-i3-mk3s-extruder-upgrade/

RE: Bondtech Direct Drive upgrade

I like the design.  Is it worth it?  That is in the eye of the beholder.  I have three installed - two on MK3s and one on a mini. In my opinion, they work better for some filaments to include TPU and flexibles.  They are easier to adjust the tension on drive against the filament.  They will not make a miraculous difference on your print quality and they do require special firmware on the Mk3S.  Worth it/. To me yes.

I looked into the Bondtech BMG too, but I ended up purchasing a LGX. More expensive than the BMG but IMHO it's worth the difference in price, specially if coupled with a Mosquito hotend (regular version, not the shortcut).

RE: Bondtech Direct Drive upgrade

I see a lot of folks say it is worth it and cheering people on to install but I have seen very few of the above posters give any substantial reason to upgrade.  I just stopped for the night from a long cross country trip so I am going to offer more meat with the potatoes.

I have three total printers with a version of the BMG - two MK3S and 1 Mini.

Pros:

  • Some report an increase in speed (nominal or minor for me)
  • I find it easier to print flexible.
  • Some report less heat creep - I never had this unless I used the Mosquito hotend.
  • I have noticed more consistency of extrusion and less jam as long as you get the installation perfect.

Cons:

  • Does not offer any significant improvement to print quality
  • The MK3S requires dedicated Bondtech Firmware

Is it worth it?  To me yes, but do not expect the holy grail of print quality.

RE:

Do not expect any 'upgrade' to fix basic problems.

First get the printer running optimally; the vanilla printer, if properly setup, works well.  With experience; after at least six months and a few hundred prints, you will have a good idea of which, if any, new features you wish to explore and what physical changes are required to address them.

Cheerio,
