Re: what is the best 3d modeling software?

The best one is the one that suits your needs best.

You should try them out yourself. Also, this list ist not very up to date anymore.

Missing but very worthy candidates are:

- TinkerCAD (free, very easy to use)
- OnShape (free)
- Fusion 360 (free for makers & startups <100k annual)

... and 123Design was discontinued.

My favorite is Fusion 360. If you never used CAD tools before, try TinkerCAD first

Re: what is the best 3d modeling software?

personally i prefer designsparks-mechanical... which is not on the list but a good free software as well.
i'ts very good if you want to design enclosures, parts for the household or other technical stuff.

in comparision to sketchup or 123D Design it's quick and more important: rock stable and reliable.
you can import *.stl files as well, convert them to a solid and alter things that you want to change.

i tried out several other freeware tools as well (including fusion360 and netfabb) but i ended up with designsparks.

but as stephan already mentioned: there's no "best 3d modeling software", it always depends on your needs, skills and preferences. some even love their openscad (which can be quite useful for certain things, i've to agree).

Re: what is the best 3d modeling software?

When I started with 3D-printing I compared many different softwares and, for me, Autodesk Fusion 360 is by far the nicest and most powerful CAD tool which is actually free (for non-commercial use). As far as I got, it seems to include all functions of Autodesk inventor (expensive commercial producat for engineers) including simple bend and stress simulations. All in a nicer and more modern GUI. The only drawback is that Fusion is always connected with the Autodesk Cloud.

- MK2/MK3 hybrid extruder

that's one point why i've rejected fusion 360, the other one is that it gets very slow when you deal with complex models.
and as far as i can remember the usage conditions about the autodesk cloud, you'll convey the rights of the things you model to them in some way.
like you dispone copyrights of your pictures when you post them at facebook.

FreeCAD and Blender, good, and freeware!

For easy usage and quick results I would suggest using FreeCAD:
https://www.freecadweb.org/
A short learning phase and you'll will have good and usable results.
Hint: Select -Part- from the pulldown menu when you start.

The other freeware is Blender:
https://www.blender.org/
This one is not such easy to learn but a very good 3D modelling program.
Will take some time to learn but a lot of tutorials on YT will help you ahead.

As said, I would prefer FreeCAD for an easy start and to get quick results.

RE: what is the best 3d modeling software?

I have used quite a few different CAD packages, and I would recommend TinkerCAD if you are just getting familiar with 3D design and don't have any previous background. Fusion 360 and OpenSCAD are the two that I keep going back to. As @tobias-k3 said, Fusion 360 is free to makers, and is very powerful. OpenSCAD is similar to TinkerCAD, but is fully open source and your designs are created with code. Having a background in programming, I am very comfortable in OpenSCAD. I have had quite a few issues with FreeCAD not working properly on my computers and Blender is extremely powerful, but it takes a good amount of effort to become comfortable in it.

I personally use SolidWorks, but it’s super expensive. If you are a student, there is a free version available if you dig around. I have access to the student version because I am on a robotics team. If you get solidworks, please please please do ALL the tutorials.

the 'Best' program, is the one you can manage the best..

different folks get on with different programs to different degrees...

Try as many as you can and then pick for yourself.

I've had very good luck with Freecad, both on the Linux and Windows platform.  The learning curve is steep for anything complex, but I've been using it for over two years now and learned the tricks and quirks of it.

OpenSCAD is too much like work.  😉
