That is a really strange one.

I had a look at it in KISS (no issues with that slicer) and found that solid side is 3mm thick.

Have you tried scaling the model to see if it makes a difference?

Scaling makes no difference and I have seen the same issue with other models before. Rare though. I assume this is a slic3r bug. Will PR look into this, do I need to report it somewhere? Thanks.

As PR have taken over development of Slic3r (or at least the branch we use), the fault does need to be advised to them.

I don't know how often Vojtech looks at the forum; it may be better to email PR directly with the subject "Slic3r Vxx fault report". Also give them a link to this thread

I looked into this issue.

The model you are trying to print is not a valid solid. Namely, it contains multiple intersecting bodies. Each slicing software uses its own strategy to fix such models. The Slic3r does its best to construct a single solid from the model, but this time it did not succeed, however Cura 15.04.4 was able to slice this particular model. For another model it may be vice versa.

The self-intersecting triangles may be well visualized in Cura 15.04.4 in the X-ray view, see the following image.

In ideal world, you would only slice correct models. You may try to fix your model using for example netfabb or the makeprintable online service. Again, each service uses a different strategy. Where one fails, the other may succeed.

For the record, the application that gave me the best success to fix these kind of issue is the 3d builder app embedded in Windows 10.

Really, I wouldn't have expected that! I'll have to try since I am using Win 10. If it can fix as well as cut I can use that instead of Netfabb.

I was as surprised as you ^^

It was on a stl exported from sketchup that none of the tools I tried (netfabb, meshmixer, 123d design...) was able to fix)

Just tried it on the object and it fixed it perfectly to use in slic3r. Much easier than Netfabb and it cuts, too. Thanks!

I agree with Christophe, the native Win 10 3D builder has done a good job for me. The latest version of Slic3r Prusa provides has had similar problems like this for a couple of models for me now. I have been able to open them in 3D builder, repair, and save them. Actually the X carriage from the MK2 printable parts had this issue for me.

I recently printed the Fillennium Malcon from Thingiverse and unfortunately 3D builder didn't work. However the online Microsoft 3D Tools did fix it. You do need a Microsoft account.

Wow, so I may need to fix online instead of local, ok, good to know, thanks. I wish I didn't have to hop around from one program to another to deal with this stuff but I'm slowly learning. Every day it's something new.

That is basically the online version of NetFabb and I find that they do very similarly in terms of results. The only downside to the online version is that it is a "no control" repair only tool.

Personally, I prefer to do everything locally where possible. I do upload to Tinkercad to complete some repairs (for example, where chunks are missing).
