Filament Runout + Multi Material = uninterrupted print

With the new Multi Material upgrade I am looking forward to implement a Filament Runout sensor. With both upgrade I think we could implement a uninterrupted print feature. Print form spool number 1and when the spool is empty switch to the next available spool. In a other post Peter mentioned that the problem with Filament Runout is that the command are buffered (16 deep). I thing it would be possible with the Multi Material upgrade design to install a sensor near the spools. The length of tube between the motor and spools should be enough to act as a buffer for the 16 commands.

Anyone else think it would a nice feature ?

Hi Luc

Yes, inserting runout sensors in the spool holder would be significantly better than on the top of the extruder mounting.

The 16 command buffer holds only movement commands, whereas all other commands are implemented immediately. It would be extremely unusual for those 16 commands to require much more than 10cm of filament.

I suspect that when the filament is unloaded it will trigger the sensor again. I already started to test different bowden runout sensors. I can't wait to see the new printed parts and firmware to start hacking.

You will maybe need a sort of "arm/disarm" manual switch connected with each filament sensor to be able to deactivate it for easy manipulation.

We can probably track spools loaded/unload status in the firmware. When the sensor is triggered we issue a unload for the filament and deactivate the sensor until a load command is issued for the spool.

In the bigger picture (not worrying exactly how to implement it) what does this feature look like? Does model get sliced as either a single or 2 color model, and then the firmware would make the printer act more like it only has the two color option, but will fall back to the two extra spools if their of the two colors it is using run out?

When the sensor is tripped, could pause the print as discussed here: http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/prusa-i3-kit-building-calibrating-first-print-main-f6/can-you-pause-a-print-for-a-day--t2326.html#p18453
