LCD shows blank rows

I just finished assembling the printer but the LCD shows two rows of blank squares.

Here is a photo of the LCD screen

Photo of the connectors on the LCD side

Photos of the connectors on the Rambo side

I did go through the following thread but decided to make a new post as I don't want to try flashing firmware or trying different orientations of connectors myself, without any guidance.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: LCD shows blank rows

Hi

Yes, I too had this issue; I know the firmware was loaded as I could hear a clicking when turning the control knob.

My printer is currently in use and I can't move it to check the connections, but what worked for me was to swap over cable 1 and 2 at both ends.

This does seem to be a really strange fix as the cables and connectors appear identical. I have had fun in the past assembling ribbon cables and am aware that is is possible that a bad connection can happen very easily, and can be "repaired" simply by pushing the connector firmly into the socket.

For a start, try swapping the cables over.

Thanks Peter,

Swapping the cables worked partially. The LCD showed welcome screen. However, I cannot scroll. I believe, the ribbon cables are not crimped properly. I will check all connections with multimeter tomorrow and post my findings.

Hi Kunal

It may be better if you contact PR via the "Live Chat" on the shop pages. Give then the link to this topic and they may be able to get you a new set of ribbon cable sent out.

As soon as my printer finishes the current job, I will let you know how mine is wired; I have a suspicion that one of the cables is reversed.

Re: LCD shows blank rows

OK there is a definite lack of consistency in the manufacture of these ribbon cables, which needs to be addressed.

On my printer, one cable has the red stripe on pin 1 and the other on pin 10, but on both connectors, pin 1 goes to pin 1. On my LCD panel, pin 1 is denoted by a square solder pad for the connector - all the others are round and on the RAMBO the pin number are marked.

As suggested, contact PR and they will get you sorted.

So, I checked the cables with multimeter. Only one cable is OK. The second cable has 4 pins with no connectivity. I used a vice to clamp the connectors tight but that didn't work. I am contacting PR now.
Thanks for your help, Peter.

Hello,

i have had exactly the same problem. The cable for P2 is defect. The printer can be run from computer without any problems in the meantime, until you get new cable.

This is the exact same issue I had. In my case I could crimp the cables together properly and then the LCD started working.

There is definitely a bad batch of ribbon cables going around at the moment.

Re: LCD shows blank rows

Hi

Last evening, I e-mailed Jakub to see if the quality of the cables can be improved. I have a feeling that the cables are bought in with the LCD panels (there was also an issue with these).

Hopefully this can be resolved quickly and all those suffering (as I did) can get replacements.

Replacement cables would be good. I've noticed that if I move one of the plugs even slightly the cable stops working. If I push it back together then its ok again. Looks like its barely making contact as long as its not moved or disturbed.

So, here is an update.

I should receive a new set of cables sometime in this week.

I also successfully controlled the printer using Pronterface and printed first part (Batman symbol) using provided Gcode. It printed really nice. I didn't have to make any changes to anything. I will explore it more in this week.

So, I received new set of cables. They are good. Everything works fine now. I was able to print through sd card.
