Issue with first layer calibration (V2Calibration)

Hi guys!

I've just completed my first attempt at building a Prusa i3 MK2S, and every built-in tests passes without any issues at all.
I really enjoyed building this kit! 🙂

However, when printing the V2Calibration, the initial 1-2 cm of the line is not printed, and it looks a bit "squished".
The rest of the lines are completed without any missing parts, but they seem a bit jagged.

I have tried to adjust the live Z-index without any success at fixing the first missing part. Can it be that the heated bed is too high at the rear left?

Thank you 😎

Re: Issue with first layer calibration (V2Calibration)

have a look at this thread and use the calibration_surface_PLA_75x75@200um_v4.zip (fourth side of the thread).

Thanks JeffJordan, I've used your calibration, and got some good results on regular prints:

However, I still have the same issue with the v2Calibration print, where the first line get squished at the start:

I have remeasured everything with a digital caliper, and calibrated everything serveral times.

I'm clueless to what the issue could be right now :-/

Maybe I'm wrong here but, if your lines changes witdth maybe you should check that your filament spool runs freely.

Thanks for your suggestion gert.l.

I have tried to manually roll on the filament spool, and the problem still occur, at the exact same place on the heated bed.
I don't believe the filament spool causes any issues, but I'm starting to suspect issues with the extruder pulley mechanism.

V2 calibration line starts with a thicker line and then goes thin. This is completely normal.

In that case, great!

I was comparing my print with the reference photo from Prusa's blog ( http://www.prusaprinters.org/original-prusa-i3-mk2-3-months-update/#attachment_4529 ), and his looked perfect:

No thats perfectly normal, the start is like a priming intro then stabilizes to normal flow rate.

I saw some of your model prints, whats your live z height set at now ?

Cool! The models were printed with the Z-index set to ~0.450.

Which slicing software are you using, by the pics looks like you have that set on fine print layer maybe 0.1, if thats the case go back to 0.2 normal print it will speed up your print speed, and tweak it from there.

If your using simplify3d slicer software, post your profile into the thread, you can tweak it a little more to get rid of your hair strings showing.

Probably the easiest explained site to tweak things on your slicer but thats related to simplify3d, and would pretty much work the same way.

Also you really want to get some fine printing done across the heat bed and willing to do some more reading and tweaking, then I highly suggest that you look at PJR's thread on 9 point calibration.

Thank you Xray965, I will check out the links you provided. I'm currently using Slic3r Prusa Edition with the default profiles. Is Simplify3D a lot better for beginners?

Re: Issue with first layer calibration (V2Calibration)

Am still a beginner, from my own point of view, the S3D software is easier to work with, I just found that the slic3r prusa edition presentability part is somewhat lacking, but they do perform equally the same as far as I have used them in my own context.

The S3D wealth of information and well documented information online just gives at an edge if your willing to shell out the extra cash, the slic3r excels by it's free price tag, there are plenty of information on the slic3r software online, but not just as organised to a dedicated software company like S3D.

Guess you get what you pay for, personally my preference is S3D from a learning curve of point of view, once you understand the principles then you can always revert back to whatever you want if other softwares present themselves as a must have.

Yeah, my biggest issue with Slic3r is usability. It does generate some great results though, and with the latest upgrade, it will produce faster G-Code.

I still will not switch from KISS though. I just find that KISS does everything I want and (when you know how to use it properly) is very simple to use.

I would like to point out, that while S3D is polished and extremely fast, Slic3r will in many cases produces better prints. Namely, S3D does not hide seams into corners while Slic3r does.

S3D slices extremely fast, also due to the limitations of the slicing engine. For example, Slic3r could do the variable layer height, it could print supports with varying layer thickness, it detects bridges better, it could print very steep overhangs by increasing the extrusion flow. S3D on the other hand just slices at regular height intervals and plans extrusions with a constant width and height.
